Have had a bit of a Rubbra-Fest over the last couple of weeks on and off during an intense trekking holiday in central/eastern Turkey. I'd transferred the Dutton series onto my portable DAP except it seems the files for the string quartets on my MacBook were empty.

Qobuz to the rescue - I've downloaded the Maggini set. I think that Rob prefers the Magginis to the Dante Quartet, but I can't remember what ferney's view was ....

Apologies - I've only just seen this! I only have the Sterling Quartet set of the Rubbra S4tets (on Conifer Classics, so probably nlea*), so can't comment on how any fares in comparison with the others. But the Sterlings are very good - and how marvellous that there are three available recordings of these neglected pieces.

(* - actually, quite "ea" - and cheaply, too, from the usual source:

Thanks ferney. I saw the Sterling set, but went for the Magginis.

And yes, three sets of Rubbra's S4ts is something to be pleased about!

I've been banging on about this release. I'm a big admirer of both Celibidache and Fassbaender and the orchestra is excellent too. It's an outstanding live performance.

Hi-Res. Having been quite pleased with Nelsons' DSCH, I figured I'd expand my Bruckner collection ..............

Having been quite pleased with Nelsons' DSCH, I thought I'd try his Bruckner 3 .........

This is the third Nelsons Bruckner Hi-Res download that I've purchased today. As I've said, I enjoyed the DSCH that he did and I think that I'll give his Bruckner a whirl.

I haven't listened to any of it yet - I will probably start with #3 later this evening.

Any views from anyone who has listened to any of Nelsons' Bruckner releases would be appreciated

Well, Stanfordians didn’t like what he heard of the 7th on Saturday morning whereas I enthused about it the day before - but then I like Andris Nelsons’s Bruckner (MDR have various relays of other AN performances of, eg, the 6th). I’ve been buying the CDs as the HiRes downloads are rather more expensive but, if you think that the 24/192 or 24/96 of the 7th is good, well, hang the expense.

Thanks HD. I've been side-tracked by Dvorak, so I probably won't get onto Nelson's Bruckner until tomorrow now.

I seem to have missed both your and Stan's dispatches on these releases, but I'm somewhat intrigued, now

But anyway, one can't go too far wrong with Bruckner

It's absolutely fabulous. And Fassbaender does well to muster enough breath for the enormously long phrases!

There was a short interview with Brigitte Fassbaender in Diapason (part of one of their monthly features where they ask artists to talk about the making of particular recordings) where she reminisced about how difficult Celi was, as, to paraphrase her, "he hated singers and did nothing to make performances easy for them, including this Kindertotenlieder". One sensed something of a battle of wills but the results continue to astonish me - I've been haunted by this performance since buying the CD late last year. No-one, not even Ferrier or Baker or Ludwig or Alice Coote more recently, quite matches the intelligence and control of her singing, especially in "In diesem wetter". Anyway, new download:

Richard Strauss: Macbeth, Don Juan, Tod und Verklärung & Festmarsch in C
                          Staatskapelle Weimar, Kirill Karabits

Not quite as good a bargain from Audite as the Prokofiev Cantata last year but, at 8,49€, not bad for a 24/96 download. It's at:

When, in 1889, Strauss assumed his office as Grand Ducal Saxon Kapellmeister, he wrote: “To Weimar, where Liszt worked for so long…” Kirill Karabits leads the Staatskapelle Weimar through Strauss’ three early tone poems composed during that time. Strauss himself described these works as “a completely new path”. The contemporaneous Festmarsch is a true rarity.

                          if anyone is interested.

Thanks for the heads up on the Karabits Strauss, HD

I fancy a modern recording of Macbeth, in particular.

I was sure they'd got the price wrong when I saw this, but no. A remarkable bargain.

Reflections: Mompou and Ravel - Julien Brocal (Piano)

On CD Review this morning - and highly punted by Thropps a few weeks ago - 24/96 download from Qobuz. Just as good as AMcG and Thropps said - and it's possibly the most natural recording of a piano (a Steinway - ex-Eugene Istomin) I've ever heard. You get a short piece by Brocal (a protégé of Maria-João Pires) as a sort of coda to what is an exceptional recital.
