I'd resigned myself to some fiddling about with these files. Won't be the first time.

Are you sure? It's more expensive.

I wondered when the sound of Alkan would bring you here!

Indeed Rob, Alkan is certainly worth it

A rather less minor annoyance is that track 11 (the first movement of the Concerto from Op. 39) is faulty. As noted in a customer review (not mine) on amazon.co.uk there are nasty digital artefacts from around 11'52 " into the file. However, having emailed Brilliant Classics re. the fault, they have responded swiftly by sending me the undamaged version of the file as a WAV. this via WeTransfer.com. I suggest others purchasing either the download or the CD boxed set similarly contact Brilliant Classics if they find the same problem. They had previously issued the pristine version on two of their Piano Classics releases.

Yes, definitely present on my download. Lasts for at least two minutes (maybe longer but I gave up listening at this point!). Email to Brilliant Classics following shortly.

What's the best email address to write to? At Brilliant Classics, I mean. I've already emailed Presto and a guy called Ed (I think that's actually short for something) replied saying he'll pass my query on to the downloads manager.

I'll see if I get the same response as you.

Update: Brilliant Classics have emailed me a clean copy of the faulty track.

Today's e-classical advent calendar offerings include two really good CDs as hi-res downloads at reasonable prices:

Making its harmonia mundi début, New York-based Ensemble Signal performs Steve Reich's Music for 18 Musicians (1974-76), a seminal masterpiece by a pioneering composer who

                        and

Julian Bliss performs the Clarinet Concertos of Mozart and Nielsen—often thought of as the two greatest such works in the repertoire, twin examples of what can be achieved

The Mozart was the BaL choice earlier this year - and the Steve Reich is a great performance

Gorgeous, if acoustically idiosyncratic (AMUZ Musikcentrum Antwerp https://www.amuz.be/en/programme/) (https://www.amuz.be/en/a-historic-ch...-concert-hall/) performances...very different from the immediacy and drive of Dausgaard, this is set back, very spacious, very relaxed but poetic and expressive too, with plenty of springiness and bounce to the quicker movements..a modern orchestra of about 50 players but with HIPPs-sounding, vibrato-lite, phrase and texture... a fairly "big" sound nonetheless.
The 24/96 download (Qobuz) bubbles with inner detail. A peach.

Stravinsky: Chant funèbre, op.5/Feu d'Artifice, op.4/Scherzo Fantastique, op.3/Le Faune et la Bergère, op.2/Le Sacre du printemps

Sophie Koch (mezzo)/Lucerne Festival Orchestra/Riccardo Chailly (24/96 download)

24/96 a significant improvement over the CD, sound-wise.

Far, far too much Chandos material from Qobuz

There are discounts of c. 25% and some of the boxed sets are very well priced.

I've binged on British symphonies (Alwyn, Arnold, Rubbra, Tippett) each for around £10 (only available in 16 bit). Also some piano sonatas (Prokofiev with B Berman and Beethoven with Lortie)

There was also some very recommendable stuff that I already had at good prices (Handley's Bax, Hickox's RVW 2 - original version)

Not had much chance to try stuff yet but I'm half listening to the Arnold at work and enjoying it.

I ordered High Rez downloads of Bernstein and the NY Phil in Mendelsohn Scottish, Italian Symphonies and Hebrides Overture, along with Schubert Unfinished, from Presto. Not exactly a bargain but these were the Mendelsohn recordings that I grew up with and the alternative was buying the big Bernstein box that was just released for about 4 times the price. The Schubert is a little quick for my taste in I but it's great to hear the double basses really digging in
