Just got this on 24/96 H-Res from Qobuz.

Bit steep at £14.99, IMO. Dearer on eClassical, forgot to check Presto.

Another Jayne recommendation!

Not keen on 3 - maybe this performance will help me along. Don't know 7.

Interesting how this thread is focused on contemporary music. Is there correlation between technofiles and new music lovers?

For what it's worth, as well as the Dutilleux box I downloaded from Qobuz two Hopkinson Smith albums of Bach Lute music sets for £3-something (each being a 2CD set).

But yes, it's an interesting observation you make. I'd hardly describe myself as a technophile - on balance I probably do have a slight preference for newer music - except when it comes to Bruckner, Mahler, Vivaldi & Webern

You can always mix in noise if you prefer things that way!

Plus a bit of wow and maybe a touch of flutter too ... anything to get a more "realistic" and swishing 78rpm experience - and short the channels together to get mono.

See #194, #202 (pp 20-21).... I thought Pristine would get more of a mention here, I must say.... in a lengthy thread like this, you can always try the Thread Search for composers/labels etc. of course, though it can be bit slow sometimes...

Encouraged by Dave2002 on the Bargains thread I went to Opera Depot which had a sale on. Found a couple of bit of Erich Kleiber (a personal obsession) that I didn't already have but also this

It's Kleiber fils from Bayreuth in 1976 in exceptionally good sound (allowing for 256kbps bit rate). The performance is, well, I don't even have the words. In fact, I put it on while doing some work and it's going to have to go off as it's just too good to half listen to

I have about 14 sets on CD, I can only imagine how many you have!

I bought it for the convenience of having a set as a download and to have a Hi-Res 24/96 recording. I'm taking it on holiday so a review might take some time to materialise. Must be on Spotify/Qobuz/AppleMusic, mustn't it?

It took a long time to download but, from what I've heard so far, it might displace the Belcea set in my affections. I have much liked the Heath Quartet since hearing them in the 2000s in Manchester and elsewhere. Fine recording in the Wigmore Hall. Love the Kasimir Malevitch cover art, too.

Well, I can't believe you said that!! My thoughts/experience exactly.

I have only listened to #4 (I have so much to get done before 6.00pm I really ought not to be listening to music!), compared to the Belcea performances which I loaded onto my DAP last week for holiday listening, and this set is going to replace the Belcea's!!

You've made my job easier, I know Bryn rates the Belcea set very highly, and I felt compelled to tell him to go straight for this new set, but was apprehensive in influencing someone to buy yet another Bartok set!. I feel confident now that someone else feels the same/similar.

I don't know the Heath Quartet, but they have a good reputation from the Tippett recordings etc.

Bryn, buy this set!!! You will not regret it. I gave the link to the Guardian review and I really don't think the reviewer has listened properly (ok, I've only listened to #4). They have such a marvelous balance between muscular attack and otherworldliness that I hear in the best performances.

This, on one listen, replaces my current go-to Bartok String Quartets - The Belcea set.

Fabulous sound quality, too! And quite a bargain.

HD's also right, it took a long tome to download.

....Just read the notes to the Schubert on Qobuz - they go into long and fascinating detail so, even if you end up disliking Venzago's re-creation, at least you'll know exactly why!
