Have been led astray once again by this forum. Love his music and hi res suits it well (there's a Poltera BIS version of the Callow Concerto)

Got to meet him briefly once after a London performance of the Cello Concerto and he seemed like a lovely man as well!

      Allan Pettersson - Symphony #9
      Norrköping Symphony Orchestra. Christian Lindberg

      24/96 Hi-Res download from eClassical.

I have the Alun Francis 9th on CPO, too, but I fancied a different performance.

        Beefy

An excellent cycle, but there are times when Alun Francis, less intense, is more illuminating IMO.

          Totally agree.

I have quite a few of each.

The Tendency nowadays is for commentators to recommend Lindberg head & shoulders above the rest. It is not as straightforward as that.

No it isn't. Johan Arnell - who conducts No. 14 in the CPO cycle - is a case in point. There are aspects of that performance that I prefer to Lindberg's more relentless one.

I don't have that, but I remember hearing it quite some time ago. I don't recall much about it, but that says more about me than Arnell!

                Vagn Holmboe - Chamber Symphonies.
Lapland Chamber Orchestra, John Gunnar Rafael Storgårds

                24 bit - 192 kHz (I don't know what that means!) Hi-Res download, Qobuz £11.99

I was listening to Holmboe Symphony #8 this morning and I remembered this recording. A forum member (I've forgotten who, sorry!) put me on to this last year, and I ordered the CD and it didn't turn up (or something like that) and I forgot about it. Anyway, they are wonderful works and I would strongly recommend people give them a listen. And thanks to the forum member who put this recording my way, it's excellent!

                  Beefy

That Holmboe looks interesting. First encountered Storgårds in in fellow Finn Kalevi Aho's 'Luosto' Symphony, premiered on a mountainside in Lapland.

192kHz - the sampling frequency - is higher-res than 44.1 or 96, hence the larger files. DXD (24-bir 352.8kHz) is even higher-res, so the file sizes are enormous. The recent Fischer Mahler 3rd is a whopping 9GB.

...so if you like that try this etc...

There's a fair bit of Holmboe - I love listening to the last three symphonies as a trilogy. They work beautifully that way even if not written as such, as they seem to subtly share and cross-reference thematic ideas.

Crikey! I had no idea the files were that big!

Oh well, so long as the superior sound quality isn't wasted on my ears

Storgårds quite new to me. There was a fair bit of mention about him a couple of years ago when there was lots of Sibelius discussion. I think it was Jayne who started it!

I got a letter from my bank manager this morning, asking me who this Jayne person is!!!

It may have been you with the chamber symphonies, I can't be sure. For some reason though, I recollect it being a bloke - either way, it was a good steer!

Those Holmboe concertos look interesting, but I think I need to slow down a bit

This is the first mention that I recall of the Holmboe Chamber Symphonies.

As you were Beefy, we can all go back to blaming Jayne for our time and financial issues......

Anyway, our holiday location is making me think about all the PMD music I have yet to get to grips with.

Blimey! I new it was last year, and I thought I had a conversation about this recording with someone!

Anyway, Jayne seems to have provided a link to these recordings earlier, so we can still blame her!!!
