The Oppo is indeed a nice piece of equipment, though the price is not that attractive. What audio formats can it handle via its USB connector? Can it indeed deal with aac, or wav in addition to mp3 and wma? Can it handle any of the more common lossless formats such as FLAC, APE or Apple Lossless? I ask because I also have a Cambridge Audio Azur 650BD which is based on an Oppo design, and that is very limited in the audio formats with which its USB port is compatible. No aac, FLAC or even WAV!

I got the Sony for around £90 a few months back, so a very good deal. My only gripe is that it wouldn't play Blu-ray Audio disc I bought. I'm hoping it will play the Wit Mahler 8, which arrived today. Fingers crossed.

It refused to play Corigliano's Circus Maximus, but worked like a charm with the Wit. IIRC you liked this M8 and I can tell you now this Blu-ray makes an already fine performance into a great one. A snip at £7.99 and, I suspect, the first of many Blu-ray Audio discs from Naxos. I wonder how many other works were recorded this way (the Wit dates from 2005).

Heads up
Abbado's recent Das Lied von der Erde is now in the archive at The Digital Concert Hall.

Another point in favour of blu-ray (which I have recently embraced) is that some modern disks are coming out with 7.1 sound, all channels lossless. I have been interested in surround sound since the 60s when I experimented with what were called Hafler circuits and the like, and I am astounded at the quality produced now. The sense of lifelikeness is incredible.
The Abbado Mahlers are not out in 7.1 but the 5.1 is definitely an improvement on simple stereo, and I think blu-ray sound an improvement over the DVD's.
