I am listening to the Monteux/LSO Daphnis and Chloe contained in 'The Decca Sound' big box right now, and the music is positively leaping from the speakers, astonishingly vivid for a recording of such vintage. I used to have this on a CD, now missing, but I don't remember it sounding anywhere this realistic. Regardless of potential duplication issues, at this price, this set is an outstanding bargain.

That looks like a nice collection, Alain, but I'm not a keen listener to organ music, except in the case of JSB, so I'll pass on that.I notice that Paray's famous version of the Saint-Saens 3rd is included, which is of course included in the original Living Presence editions.

The Monteux Daphnis was one of my earliest stereo LPs, and now of course on CD. When I bought the LP I had been lucky to see him conduct it at the RFH, a memorable evening.

I had the Ace of Diamonds - what a stunning performance and recording, and now of course as you say on CD. What a wonderful conductor he was and I guess an inspiration to a whole generation of conductors.

There may be several couplings by Monteux with the Enigma Variations. One is this one, with Dvorak's 7th Symphony - which is extremely good - http://www.prestoclassical.co.uk/r/A...nce/ELQ4805019 and for CD collectors perhaps an alternative to Paita's recording of the 7th which is outstanding. I did see Monteux conduct once, in Liverpool, though I can't remember what was played. Perhaps RLPO historians would know.

I agree with rfg about the Decca Sound box - it's very good - though I don't play CDs from it too much. When I do I'm really impressed with both the quality of the sound and the recordings. I think the other boxes in the Decca Sound series (Analogue Years and Mono) are probably also very well worth while, but I've not got round to them yet. I don't actually see why the second of those boxes has the specific title "Analogue Years" as surely some of the recordings in the original DS box were also analogue - but presumably recordings in box number 2 had no digital processimg before the remastering for CDs.

The Monteux Enigma I have is coupled with Sibelius S2, on a CD that has cover art that might qualify for the curious design thread: what is going on here?

The Monteux D&C I have is coupled with Rapsodie Espagnole and the Pavane.

In which case you might like to consider this

or this if you can find a less costly copy

There are quite a lot of JSB works in the Dupré box, although some of the performances are very magisterial. I assume that is because of the intransigence of the organ and the St-Sulpice acoustic (or Dupré's preference).

                      - and I have his Enigmas coupled with Karajan's VPO Planets.

Quite. My earlier CD incarnation of the Monteux Daphnis was coupled with the Dvorak 7. And when I bought the 'Decca Sound' box I was expecting an all analog set, but it is roughly half digital. The Analog box focuses more on the late 50s to mid 70s. I should hasten to add that the digital recordings are all very fine, and sound as if they have had some remastering as well (I did a brief comparison with a Dorati/Detroit recording that I had).
The Decca are generously filled. While retaining original cover work of the lp of the featured work, the fillers are generous, ocassionally equaling the featured work in length. Many of the Sony/RCA boxes only reproduce the original lp, resulting in short timed CDs, although the boxes are so inexpensive that one can't complain

As ever, you are a fount of knowledge, jayne!
But how this relates to Sibelius 2 or the Enigmas (not D&C) still escapes me.
(I bought the CD from a Hungarian supplier, for the Sibelius; though on Decca Eloquence, this coupling was not released in the UK, so perhaps the choice of cover art fitted in with some other - non UK - releases we didn't get to see.)

There are several gracious ladies in the Enigmas, so when they got bored in the art department that day.... what really happens in Variation 8....

Would like to get myself an XMass gift after spending on all the loved ones. I am thinking of the complete Brendel Phillips box. I so appreciate Brendel more with time
