Which Pierre Monteux Brahms 2 ?

Eloquence - having released the lovely VPO Monteux Brahms 2 last year have now released his LSO version made in the early 1960s .

Which do you prefer or know ? On first listening I think the LSO just has it a pitch perfect performance of enormous charm .

I know neither, but if the LSO Brahms performances on the CD are the equal of the Sibelius 2, Daphnis and Chloe, and Enigma that he recorded with the LSO around that time, they should be very special indeed.
I assume that he does the first movement exposition repeat, as on the VPO recording (so the review of that tells me).
Brahms S2, as I've said here several times already, was my A-level set work, and I never tire of it.

I bought both Eloquence CDs back in May this year, when I became 'aware' (previously I didn’t care much for Brahms, other than a number of chamber works). Haven’t played them for a while, but from memory I have a slight preference for the earlier VPO performance.

It also has a terrific Academic Festival Overture that might win over even the most sceptical about this piece .
