Mozart Edition - complete this time.

DGG is issuing a more complete Mozart Edition than the Philips one of 25 years ago.

I deplored the fact that there were some small omissions last time round, but this version seems to have covered just about everything - repeats, Handel arrangements, etc. and definitely more to please HIPP enthusiasts.

£300 for 200 CDs. 1970 Decca Ace of Diamonds prices, but 2016 CD quality.

For Mozart's 200th anniversary, Barenreiter published a miniature score version of the complete works. It went out of print a few years later, and the edition is only available at a much greater cost. Dare we hope for a reprint of the 1991 edition to celebrate Mozart 225?

I think I mentioned this on the New Releases thread a few weeks ago - most people thought that they wouldn't have any need of it.

Back in 1970 I would not have bought 200 SDDs at one go. The duplications in the 'new' box for me are not inconsiderable, and the shelf-space requirement poses the usual problem. Without a detailed track listing it is difficult to say but it does look an interesting mix of performances.

What a dilemma! On the plus side, an outstanding bargain, I dont think I've ever seen quality CDs going so cheap. A chance to get a huge box of the world's great music for peanuts. On the minus side, that's quite a lot of peanuts, I've got quite enough Mozart on my shelves already and, great composer or not, my appetite for his music is limited.

On balance I think I will get it, the bargain is too good to pass up. Pity it wasnt Stravinsky though.

I certainly don't need it, but that alone will not stop me.

Far too much duplication of recordings I already have. I will therefore rely on the Brilliant Classic box for the 'also ran' works from the new box.

A real mix of ensembles and individual performers. The string quartets, for instance, have the Quartetto Italiano, the Hagen Quartet, the Emersons, the Orlando ...

Perhaps, with the accompanying printer matter, the boxed set might be worth thinking about after all.

Didn't Mozart pop into the Tardis and nick loads of stuff from Stravinsky's The Rake's Progress?

As to the Complete Stravinsky, there's always:

Of course, I've just realised I've already got the Columbia box of Stravinsky, just havent got round to playing it yet. Too many bargains around at the moment.

I have ordered the 200 disc Mozart box, but it wont actually arrive until the end of the month.

Has anyone here got hold of this (Mozart: The New Complete Edition) yet? amazon.co.uk were claiming to be dispatching it last Saturday. They didn't. They now claim it will be delivered tomorrow but still have is shown as "We've got your order", "Preparing for Dispatch" and "Arriving tomorrow". I have my doubts since the "Dispatching soon" is greyed out.

A friend of mine had it last week. Not sure if it was from amazon, though.

I picked up mine from the local hifi shop on Saturday. There are four boxes each containing 50 discs: two are labelled Orchestral and two Chamber. There are also two substantial books, one on Mozart's life and one on the music.

Unfortunately it will have to be replaced, because both Orchestral and both Chamber boxes contain the same CDs! Obviously a packaging mix up by DG, landing me with two copies of half the discs and no copies of the other half.

I wonder if that could be the reason for the delay in the dispatch and delivery of mine?

[Hmm. I note that amazon.co.uk are no longer offering the box direct, only via a marketplace vendor, and for some £42 more than I am due to be charged when they get round to dispatching my order.]

Could be. There is presumably another unfortunate out there somewhere with the same problem as me, so DG may be holding the rest back while they check the stock.

I also had to pay a bit more than three hundred quid, because the hifi shop needed to add their mark up: I dont mind paying them to do the ordering, it saves me the hassle.
