I can vouch for it having been a live broadcast.

Nothing more to say really, save to agree with you (et al) and disagree wholeheartedly with Stanfordian's rather bilious outburst.

Even so, I do think it deserved pride of place in a big compendium of the great Handel oratorios.

        Hello underthecountertenor,

You say Bilious! That's a bit excessive. I doubt the words "stuttering", "stumbling", "ums" and "ers" would be construed as venomous or nauseous in most people's vocabulary. If you thought it was OK then fair enough. It all felt very amateurish to me and I found it hard getting past the presentation to the content!

I was also listening in a car. I didn't notice any major problems, and I enjoyed some of the music immensely. I wasn't thinking of indulging in the sets mentioned, but maybe now I will.

I think we're using different dictionaries, Stanfordian. Mine has a greater range of meanings for 'bilious'!
And you do appear to be in (or indeed to be) the minority here...

That may or may not be the case. However, the Forum is not a democracy, and all viewpoints are valid, as long as they are within House Rules. This particular use of terminology could be viewed as a personal attack, so is better avoided. (Or it could simply be Ron Weasley's middle name. )

Added to which, a minority view can be the spur which provokes a clear expression of the majority view. Criticism of people under public scrutiny is inevitable, and such people expect it; but having the support piling in with the opposite viewpoint is reassuring (in the event, of course, that they happen in this case to be reading the Radio 3 Forum!).
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

                  Hiya underthecountertenor,

I do find your hyperbole amusing. I don't mind being in the minority and see that state as an insult. You see I can only speak for myself. I'm glad people enjoyed the Handel review under discussion. I love those Handel oratorios/odes and already have the Carus box set.

Fair enough, and I'm glad you're amused!

CG's review had me rushing back to the wonderful Von Otter Hercules (which may lead to a more general Otterfest). I wasn't very taken with what I heard of the Carus set, apart from the excerpt from the Brockes-Passion - a work I don't have and I'd be tempted by that recording if I could buy it separately.

                    Bws (honest!)

Me too...I was captivated by that excerpt played. I don't know the piece at all. I think there was an older version from Nicholas McGegan and Capella Savaria many years ago, but it hasn't been very lucky on disc.

Though the remaining CDs in the full box will "only" cost under £40 extra I think -
Order musical scores (choral scores, choral collections, organ music etc) from Carus-Verlag, your music publisher in Stuttgart, with choral music at its heart music

I did get the feeling that the Decca set is the one to go for, though, particularly with Anne Sofie von Otter.
