    Worst CD of 2010?

No doubt for me. Hilary Hahn playing the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto. Possibly my fav. concerto given a very dull 'performance'. Young Nicola Benedetti is far superior, IMHO!

I know I'll upset Bryn if I nominate again the Mahler 9 recording from Sir Roger Norrington as I did on the old boards but for sheer awfulness it wins hands down. No contest.

    Sorry.

The only upsetting thing about that is your distinct lack of musical taste, Petrushka. It was very nearly top of my list for best release of the year. Quite the finest of his Mahler recordings, and easily the best live recording of the 9th since Walter's 1938 Vienna Phil.

This is easy. Anne Sofie von Otter sings "Love songs". She sings The Beatles, Michel Legrand, Joni Mitchell and others and it is absolutely one of the worst discs I have ever heard.

That's a low blow Bryn. If it's meant to be a tease, then a might be helpful to signal that fact. If you're serious, then it's the sort of generalising non-sequitur that I think is unwarranted in sensible debate. No need to be so scathing.

Angela Hewitt's third volume of Beethoven Sonatas. The most unmagical Moonlight I've ever heard and recorded at the bottom of a mineshaft from the sound of it. Very disappointing.

A strong contender, I must admit.

I really don't like this kind of thread. It brings out the worst in me, and, I suspect, in others. And when it becomes another Norrington bashing thread, I want to pile on the venom even further. But for today, at least, I'll be on my best behaviour.

I refer the Hon Member to message 6 in the following thread:

                      Best recording of 2010.

                        Surely you meant Message 6?

Not intended as any kind of 'bashing' thread, Alpine. Simply a means to express the disappointment of spending money and feeling short changed, disappointed and fooled by the hype.

PS. I played in the Scottish premiere of the Alpine Symphony. A great occasion!

Norrington's Mahler 9 is the worst CD of the decade, never mind the year. I really can't understand how such an apparently intelligent musician could inflict such musical carnage on this amazing symphony.
