Some two-thirds of these are pre-1939: A four CD set from Decca Eloquence, 'From Melba to Sutherland - Australian Singers on Record.' 80 singers in all:
Nellie Melba, Frances Alda, Horace Stevens, Peter Dawson, Malcolm McEachern, John Brownlee, Florence Austral, Margherita Grandi, Marjorie Lawrence, Sylvia Fisher, Gladys Moncrieff, June Bronhill, Joan Hammond...
I spent a dozen years of my life on this project!
Googling this item, I came across a 1 hour programme on Australian BC - use the listen again Link (to the left of the CD image). 10 tracks (or excerpts of) were played (listed on the web page)
May I add Maria Nemeth to the illustrious names earlier in the thread. Once heard never forgotten.
Eva Turner and Alexander Kipnis too.
I first came across Kipnis via the Wolf Society and Schubert Lieder LP boxes and now have quite a few recordings including Brahms (eg Vier ernste Gesänge).
I really enjoy Heinrich Schlusnus (despite complicated Nazi associations - he sang at Göring's wedding in 1935 but also sang Mahler and Mendelssohn). Im Abendrot
