I suspect this is aimed at collectors rather than music lovers. I could imagine those who could afford it leaving it in its original wrappings.

Apparently that is quite common of vinyl buyers generally nowadays - they buy the vinyl it comes with a free download and they listen to that .

I cannot quite see the point of not also making Rattle's new Brahms available on CD and to download as well .

I suspect it won't be THAT much different to his EMI/WARNER set from a few years ago.

Probably - I see there is a new set from Andris Nelsons coming recorded live with the Boston Symphony .

I have a number of sets of the Brahms symphonies. It's the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig / Riccardo Chailly on Decca and the Philharmonia / Otto Klemperer on EMI that are the two I turn to.

What put me off the Klemperer set is the 1st symphoiy's rather too ponderous opening?

Anyone got a view on Kubelik's VPO Brahms cycle?

It's available at circa £15 from Qobuz as a 16 bit download remastered Decca Eloquence release.

I'm tempted, but would welcome forum opinions.

They are good, bearing in mind they are 50s Decca Recordings and the Eloquence transfers improve considerably on the originals. The performances show the sunnier side of Brahms. I bought the CDs for under £8 inc p&p, so you need to think whether the download is worth nearly double that amount. If you haven't done so yet have a look at the Amazon description and review of the performances. I see the lowest price at the moment is around a tenner.

Thank you Cloughie. I'm often caught between the excellent bargains to be had on that antediluvian format and the convenience of downloads.

As an anteduluvian luddite I don't have that problem!

I've got more Brahms cycles than the cat had kittens but any views on the newish Boston SO/Nelsons cycle?
