Nos. 1-3 are from his last cycle, 1980s (DDD) and No. 4 is from the late 1970s (ADD). There has been speculation why the 1980s digital 4th was omitted in favour of the 1970s recording.

I listened to it recently in its '1980' box release and have to say that it sounded pretty splendid!

Same here - I have the bog-standard single DG CD issues, which IMV, sound splendid. Don’t know if the 1980s box set is remastered.

Just looked, Beefy, and no sign of remastering although I've always suspected that there may have been some tinkering going on to lessen Herbie's notorious knob twiddling in the studio...

Yes - that list coincides almost exactly with my own favourites (I'd only swap the Jochum - which I don't know - for Cantelli). Listening to Kempe with the RPO the other week; that's pretty damn fine, too.

BPO maybe? It certainly is.

The ideal Brahms 3 apart from sound is probably Walter's earliest recording though, with the VPO from 1936. Also an invaluable document in terms of historical performance practice. I'd add the Jochum/LPO in the top five along with Kempe/BPO, Walter/Columbia, and Kertész. I have probably explained why somewhere.

Does this mean that;

a) he didn't actually record a 4th in the 1980s?

or b) that he did record it, and it was not released?

or c) that he did record it, it was released, but is no longer available?

Just remembered that I have a DG Galleria CD of nos. 3 and 4 'recorded 10/1977 - 2/1978' (that's what it says on the sleeve) so I'm guessing that no. 4 here was recorded in 78, and no. 3 in 77.... plus it claims to be 'digitally remastered'....

According to the extremely comprehensive book supplied with the 80's set, Karajan und Die Berliner Philharmoniker recorded Brahms 4th symphony in October 1988.

Or, I suppose I'm asking, is there a companion CD with the 1st and 4th? I've only ever seen the 1st coupled with Schumann.

Probably best to ferret around Amazon or eBay. Different countries can have different editions. Happy hunting!

Sadly not - I ferreted about and found DG Accolade CDs of 1-3 and a symphony edition of 4
