it is not my favourite Mahler so only have a few recordings and I have always been content with Bruno Walter's late-fifties recording.
Lucky you VF - it is definitely something that I have heard about before but I do not know if anyone still follows this idea .

Not as far as I am aware; the instruction for the 5 minute break was, I believe in the original score but, whilst the composer seemed to feel that it was necessary at the time, I doubt that he would have continued with it at a time when audiences had become accustomed not only to it but also to his later symphonies.

The instruction is in the published score: Hier folgt eine Pause von mindestens 5 minutes ("An Interval of at least five minutes now follows") - Mahler seeming to see the First Movement as the first "Act" of a two-Act quasi-Music Drama. (He would probably have expected - or, at any rate, wanted - applause, though.)

Walter's Mahler 2 - minimalised - his 2 piano arrangement - well worth a listen. Apparently the arrangement was done in collaboration with Mahler.

Mahler was a well-known coffee addict.

Actually, IIRC, it was after the premier of the Resurrection that Mahler needed surgery for his haemorrhoids - the "five minutes" may have been taken up with other matters!

Sir Simon Rattle's recording, really got me into this work, then, Solti but finally Abbado. I might go back to the Solti soon.

Recent Mahler 2s that have impressed me include Chailly's with the LGO (Accentus DVD/Blu-ray) abd Simone Young's (Oehms). The classic Klemperer has been very well remastered; it's part of Warner's OK Mahler box.

                          I thought he meant "Georg".
