There was a 5 minute break after the first movement with no applause as the conductor left and then returned with the soloists - supposedly in line with the composers instructions. Do they ever do this nowadays?

The instruction is in the published score: Hier folgt eine Pause von mindestens 5 minutes ("An Interval of at least five minutes now follows") - Mahler seeming to see the First Movement as the first "Act" of a two-Act quasi-Music Drama. (He would probably have expected - or, at any rate, wanted - applause, though.)Numquam Satis!

Actually, IIRC, it was after the premier of the Resurrection that Mahler needed surgery for his haemorrhoids - the "five minutes" may have been taken up with other matters!Numquam Satis!
