I received not one but two free copies. I’ve never bought the magazine, contacted, let alone subscribed. And yes, there is IRR reference, different for each copy. I did buy a couple of IRR back numbers but how did they get hold of the details?

Freebie here too. Again, IRR number - I took that briefly after giving up Gramophone at its nadir. Seems to have proper articles in it (before I gave it up, reviews apart it took as long to read as it did to turn the pages) but I'm not about to start again.

I wonder what their success rate will be with this? Targeted, certainly, but expensive.....

I was grateful to see a specimen copy of the mag after not having read it for so many years. It certainly isn't the long read that it used to be. My main problem is that the cost of p&p to me here in France makes it much too expensive for consideration.

Also got a free mag this morning. I used to buy every month and keep them. Now all dumped but for old times' sake I've kept the first and last copies I bought (Oct 71 and Nov 2005). I really used to look forward to Gramophone as my main source of news and reviews but now there is so much online I don't miss it and I won't be renewing. I occasionally thumb through a copy at the newsagent's but haven't actually bought a copy since 2005.

                  Hey MickyD,

The digital version is the answer, n'est-ce pas?

I'm furious I've had no freebies!!!
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
                    Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

If whoever has responsibility for the financial affairs of IRR sold their subscription lists to make a few pounds, I would not complain. I think the late Barry Irving gave considerable backing from his own pocket, so I imagine there's some debt to be repaid. I wonder if all the contributors got paid for their last reviews, for example.

The closure of IRR left a big hole and The Gramophone is not filling it by a long way. (Sorry - I can't remember if The Gramophone currently has a definite article or not. It seems to be in the same category as The Radio Times and The Wigmore Hall.)

I really can't remember. There were articles about Boulez, but nothing very original; and Alice Cooper's choice of music towards the back. Apart from that, my mind's a blank.

                          I've had no freebies, either.

                          Rascal discrimination.

                            I blame Compton Mackenzie.

I got a free copy this morning. I assume that they are going through the records and tracing old subscribers, I wonder how far back?

Ah, so I won't get a copy as I moved house last year...
