Brahms Concerto - Janine Jansen

Anyone heard it or bought it ? Interesting if slightly puffy interview with her in Gramophone and RO liked it a lot . I was interested to read what she says about Pappano's cantabile conducting as I must admit to liking Brahms to sing - Bruno Walter's glorious late Brahms recordings for example .

Quite tempted .

Glad to see RO putting in a good word for the Chung/Solti Bartok VC 1 - a wonderful record coupled with a beautiful possibly too beautiful account of the Berg .

I agree about the tone of the Jansen interview which was probably done by email or telephone; these are rarely face to face these days. In the Brahms Violin Concerto I admire Mutter with the Berliner Philharmoniker under Karajan on DG which is quite an achievement by the teenager.

Hi Barbi. Yes, I have it although it only arrived yesterday having got lost in the post. The nice guys at Presto had to send me another! To be honest, I've only listened once but I'm driving, alone, to the Borders so I should be able to listen very loud. I would recommend anything this lady plays as I been very impressed with all her discs as well as times I've heard her live.

I have heard the Bartok twice and it's very good.

Yes I agree about that recording - described as epic by RO although I am also fond of her later recording with Masur .

There are so many great recordings of this piece other favourites of mine being the Oistrakh/Klemperer , Ida Haendel and Celibudache and most of all Menuhin/Kempe .

Ah all record covers can date terribly - just think of that amazing floral shirt duo of Perlman and Previn on their Mendelssohn & Bruch Concerto disc .

This record finally arrived today and I was very impressed by it . I have seldom heard such purely beautiful violin playing and she won me over to her relatively low key interpretation . that is not to say that it is slow or boring but it is rather less dramatic than some say the heroic Menuhin/Kempe or the majestically grand Mutter/Karajan .

The spirit of the Adagio seems to permeate all three movements in her hands but there is no sense of pretty playing for the sake of it and for all the silly picture of an arm wrestling Pappano and Jansen on the back of the CD cover they are hand in glove .i found myself wondering what a Pappano cycle of Brahms symphonies would be like and wishing we soon found out

The Bartok is terrific - if this an accurate portrait of Steffi Geyer no wonder Bartok fell in love with her .
