Hi PG,
If you have a suitable computer, you could try copying the disk to see whether a new copy works. I have all my CDs on computer now and a small number of them didn't read well and took some copying. Only 2 or 3 in 2,500 had tracks that eventually failed to read this way.

Yeah... You're not supposed to put CD mats into TEAC-type transports (concave-flexing, whole disc clamp etc...), but I tried it & all that happens is - either the layercake is accepted or it makes a funny noise and comes out again, or keeps growling & waits for you to press exit. The Quad Elite transports are bespoke (I think?), but their simple tray sounds more like a Philips or Sony type so it should be very accommodating. You'd almost certainly get away with it, but - the potential embarassment-factor is part of the apprehension...!

Maybe time to cut the crap and get into downloads?

Yes, the Maggies are quite something. Mrs. PG bought them second hand in a moment of fiscal irresponsibility! They belonged to a chap who had taken the trouble to have bespoke stands made before deciding he wanted the very latest Quads! To be honest, they are probably too big for our sitting room but, my goodness, they sound great. One of my best friends has a Mackintosh amp and a CD player. How I wish we could get the Maggies connected to the Mackintosh!

Amazon are delivering a new copy of the Honeck today so let's see how copy no. 3 goes.

Downloads? Well, I'm too old to fiddle about with all that computer stuff. I often take discs in the car so I would just have to make a copy... etc, etc! I've got 22,000 CDs, (many from charity shops, eBay and car boot sales), so it's probably not worth the bother. (I'm also lucky enough to have a very tolerant wife!)

I have to say that after the solid build of the Meridian equipment, the Quad gear is, in comparison, quite flimsy. The tray is, I think, a Phillips job, but the money has obviously gone into the electronics.

Just as a possibly relevant aside - I yesterday made a copy of a Collins Classics CD of R Strauss's Also sprach... etc, (LSO Kaspszyk) that had started to look a bit of an odd colour - I think I nipped it in the bud before the thing became unplayable.

I've done that a couple of times and keep the copy in the original box with the original cd. I once picked up an original Chandos disc of Sibelius 5 with the SNO under Gibson that had a scratch that affected the last chords so they stuttered in a way Jean Sibelius would have been perplexed by! A cd copy ironed out the problem.

If this doesn't work with the Honeck I'll maybe do the same. At least I contacted the production company to let them know!

Interestingly , I have a second-hand copy of the EMI Profile on Kletzki that went the other way . I cannot get the finale to transfer of Sibelius 2 onto iTunes without it hiccuping at a minor scratch that does not stop it playing perfectly well on other CD players .

Now that you've got your problem sorted out I thought I'd single out this that had my jaw crashing through the floor. Where do you live? Edinburgh Castle? The Usher Hall? I've probably got about a quarter of that total (have you actually counted them?) and my admittedly small listening room is packed to bursting.

I'm green with envy, naturally, but I know for certain I've already got more than enough to see me out yet still the flood of new purchases shows no sign of abating.

Well, we don't have and have never had children so I've had the money to indulge my favourite hobby of wandering around Edinburgh's many charity shops searching out second hand CDs. I'm lucky enough to have an indulgent wife so our spare bedroom is shelved. And I've been collecting CDs since they first started.

One of Mrs. PG's ex-tutor's spent a few days with us and made it a mission to count them.

It's far too many but still I want more.

Like Petrushka, my jaw hit the floor on reading that figure... That works out at buying about 733 per year (assuming 30 years of collecting)... And it would take 7 and a half years to listen to them all at a steady rate of 8 hrs per day (assuming an ungenerous 60 minutes average per disc).
