Our daughter is a ballet fan with a special love for Kenneth MacMillan' s work and on her prompting earlier this year my wife and I went to ROH for the Das Lied von der Erde. She had loved it and had already seen it twice, not having previously known the music. She asked me about recordings and I mentioned a couple including the classic Ferrier/Walter/VPO. Later at our house she must have noticed my reviving interest in vinyl, with a new turntable recently installed, because my LP-shaped present from her turned out to be this recording, which I do have on CD but not on vinyl. She had got it on ebay and an added bonus was Bruno Walter's obituary, cut out from the Times of Feb 19 1962 and left in the sleeve by a previous owner.

Another present to self arrived this morning. I missed the flash sale offers on amazon.de but found the Glenn Gould Re-mastered box at amazon.it for £102.64 (including p&p), so ordered it on the 24th inst. As is so often the case with such orders, it was sent not from Italy but form within the u.K. A 5 day 'free' delivery service over the festive season is not bad, eh?
It is certainly an extravagantly presented set. The box is huge in comparison to the card slip-cased CDs it contains. Indeed the lavish book which accompanies the CDs is what has dictated the design and dimensions of the box. I might just remove the CDs, in their immediate slip-cases, from the box and simply shelve them. The slip-cases are all labeled on their spines, and the original programme notes are reproduced on the slip-cases too.

A seriously indulgent ( and slightly early ! ) Hi Fi present to self this year in the form of a new Chord Hugo DAC has allowed numerous recordings to emerge freshly minted from my Harbeth's and ProAc's since it arrived - listening again to various CBSO / Rattle Haydn Symphony recordings on EMI has been a particular delight.
On the new CD front, I have two appetising sets to listen to - Nielsen Chamber Music ( various ) and Symphonies of Asger Hamerik ( Helsingborg SO / Dausgaard ) both on Dacapo, one of my favourite labels, so much to look forward to.
