      Hello, Seabright.

There was an article in The Independent on 18 Sept 1998 by Bayan Northcott. I don't know how to do links but he wrote 'So farewell then, Record Review..... Richard Osborne, Anthony Burton and Jonathan Swain...... have been sacked. .... Instead we have CD review, fronted by the single bland persona of Andrew McGregor, fresh from On Air.'

      Hope that helps.

          Blame the online calculator then.

Or my cut and paste technique.

edit....just checked and the calculator didn't have space for anything like enough numbers !!

Hope it didn't ruin anybody's day.

I tried to work it out on paper. Before I gave up the struggle, I conceded that you were probably right.

While it's true that AM was indeed 'fresh from On Air', one aspect I would point to: that a move to having a single presenter, week in, week out, was not a good idea. So Composer of the Week as well and, eventually, Discovering Music both went that way and I think were better when they had a variety of approaches. That has nothing to do with disapproval of any presenter who does act as the single 'host'.

Programmes that didn't go for one presenter had two, alternating. But the idea behind it seems to have been establishing the presenters as essential to the familiar programme 'brand' - and in some cases it reflected changes within the programmes. In other words, presenters were 'promoted'.
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

Not always so, frenchie? Record Review was presented solely by John Lade for years, succeeded by ??? before Richard Osborne (although none of them hogged quite as much airtime during the programme as frequently happens now on the "Andy MacGregor Show") - and Music Matters was Michael Oliver's programme for nearly twenty years - never "alternating" with anyone else.

AMcG is one of the few Radio 3 presenters who does a really good job (apart from those BaL duets), so I see no reason to mess things up.

I don't go back as far as you do, ferney! - as far as Record Review was concerned, I was going by Bayan Northcott's mention of Richard Osborne, Anthony Burton and Jonathan Swain. The 'alternating programmes' I was thinking of were Breakfast, CD Masters/Classical Collection/Essential Classics, In Tune, Late Junction, Wo3 …

It also looks as if in John Lade's day RR was only an hour long … ? When did it change to 3+ hours?
