Rossini Italian in Algiers £3 VPO/Abbado in Aldeburgh today. I see RO rather damned it with faint praise in Gramophone as not being funny enough .

The Beethoven Symphonies, No 7, Klemperer and the Philharmonia, the original LP, 33Cx 1369, in near-mint condition (this would be from 1956)! £1.49. I played it last night. Marvellous, who needs stereo, the various strands perfectly clear, the woodwind prominent, tight rhythms, huge drama...

(in fact, of course, on modern stereo, the actual timbre of the woodwind sound is audible and much more realistic...)

Not cheap (well, it was Oxfam in York, the branch near the Minster) - Emil Hartmann Chamber Music on daCapo. It was still in the shrink wrap! Still, £6 is cheaper than new from anywhere else. Looking forward to giving this a spin, hopefully tomorrow. Mind you, I do have a CD review I've been asked to write but I think I'll leave that for now and hear the Hartmann!
              Best regards,
              Jonathan

Got the first four Batman Movies on DVD unopened for £1. No intention of watching them, but older son has claimed it.

The Grumiaux Trio appear in both the String Quintets 3CD box and the other Quintets 3CD box, both in the Mozart Edition... subsequently reissued. The String Quintets K515/516 were first choice in a BaL, I remember and quite beautifully recorded. The La Salle (Op.127) was featured in La Tribune last Sunday, but was voted off fairly early on. Still £3 a pop, not bad!

I think more highly of the LaSalle 's Beethoven than many critics, who found them dull. I like their tempi.

While this thread's up, and forgive me for veering off-classical, I was pleased t find this morning in a local charity shop two green-label Columbias from 1959, one of which still had the original price on it , 34s1.5d (including 'purchase tax'!) .

33SX 1188 : 'Big Ben's Minstrel Show' (basically a Norrie Paramor disc) ad

33SX 1197 : 'Time to Celebrate'. Russ Conway and Geoff Love.

I haven't tried to play them yet, but M. O-H likes this kind of music .

A first edition second impression of The Sandcastle by Iris Murdoch, with a shabby but still very rare dust jacket. £4 and worth a very healthy multiple of that.

A friend told me that charity shop managers are being instructed to look up the cost of CDs on Amazon and price accordingly. I certainly think my local Shelter shops have started doing that since common or garden discs are priced at £1 whereas anything a bit more unusual tends to be priced higher.
