Yes, and the Beethoven was a fine bonus, too.

I would have bought that cd if it had been in the charity shop.
Annoyingly listening to and commenting on radio 3...

I was delighted to find a clean set of the Barenboim/Klemperer Beethoven concertos with their original 'Angel' labels. I well remember the interest they generated on their first appearance in 1969, as a limited-edition lower-price set (the first time , I think, EMI did this) instead of individual discs. It was interesting too to find Suvi Raj Grubb's account of the sessions, evidence of EMI's investment in Barenboim as an artist and personality to publicise, quite a change from the sober detatchment of former sleeve-notes.

              Today:

Ypes/Melos Ensemble - Boccherini: Guitar Quintets
              Previn/LSO - Prokofiev: Alexander Nevsky/Rachmaninov: The Bells
Tasmin Little/Martin Roscoe - George Dyson: Works for Piano & Violin
              Chung/Zimmerman - Strauss/Respighi: Violin Sonatas
              Tate/ECO - Beethoven: Missa Solemnis
Rasmussen/Aarhus Symphony Orchestra - Gade: Korsfarerne

              Total cost to self: £1.98p

A classic ‘hold and drop’ moment earlier in the week: one shop I occasionally visit had had a deposit of opera DVDs, which it had put in a cabinet to signify its ‘special value’. One of them was a DG recording of Hindemith’s Cardillac, an opera currently unavailable on CD. I was prepared to pay up to a tenner, given its rarity but it was beneath a load of other stuff, so I couldn’t see the price tag. I asked someone to open the cabinet for me, only to discover it had been priced at ....£29.99.

Pretty pointless sticking it in a cabinet at that price, where no-one will buy it.

Last week, had to bus into town, passed charity shop, then back-tracked into shop, and found Mozart Complete Piano Sonatas, Klara Wurtz, Brilliant 5-cd box-set–excellent condition–£1–well worth wait for the back-to-home bus.

Was quite pleased with the original CD release on EMI of Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk (£4) LPO/Rostropovich.

Not often do I find the über bargains evidenced by messages above.

                      The Bohm Ring for £1.99?

I have that set (twice!) but it would’ve been rude not to pick it up for that price!

I picked up the Solti Ring (1997 remaster) a few years back for four quid, but blimey.....!

Strange recording venue, I thought, then I reread it. (I've known a few SA venues in my time...)

The SA Hall in Oxford Street London (near the corner with Regent Street) has pretty execrable acoustics.

That one's known in the trade as The Rink, which betrays its origins, curiously similar to the Maida Vale BBC studios.
