If it’s any consolation, there are times I go for long periods and find absolutely nothing!

Just checked my shelves to make sure I had not been burgled recently.

Come to think of it, which release of the Kubelik Mahler? When I saw the most recent release with the Blu-ray added for a few pence over £25 a couple of years ago, I was added it to the earlier release of just the CDs. I suppose I ought to pass my old set on to some deserving charity shop. Trouble is, I'd feel a bit miffed if they then sold it on for a pittance, so maybe the BHF, they always seem to charge higher prices than most.

A little haul from a National Trust second hand shop. Sadly , the NT closed over 160 of its gift shops last year, and many have been replaced by SH book shops.

Gesualdo. Sesto Libro di Madrigali. La Compagna del Madrigale.

Charpentier Te Deum and Messe de Minuit.
          Choir of KCC / Willcocks.
          Baroque Guitar. Julian Bream

£10 for this, 3 DVDs and a book.

Exploring the Ring. Perry Lorenzo. Anybody listened to this?

The Gesualdo I think is supposed to be good and I know the Bream is good!

I find that Oxfam charge more than any of the other charity shops that I frequent, but their CDs are arranged alphabetically and by genre.

The chap who volunteers in the Oxfam Music Shop tells me that he’s instructed to look up all classical donations on Amazon. He finds the lowest price then knocks off a pound.

My experience in the Home Counties. I ask myself long and hard whether I really need a CD. And usually I don't. For £1 more, I can get the CD at a later date, at my own convenience, not searching through a large tray of CDs to find something of interest.

I haven't been in a non-essential shop such as a charity shop since Feb 2020 - I may have broken the habit.

I tell a lie - I've dropped off some bags of books, and have a major exercise to weed my books underway. Seems like madness to start browsing with a view to buying books again ...........

I thought I’d hit the jackpot when I found Haitink’s Mahler 6 with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra for 99p in a local charity shop. A quick check on Amazon saw it available for around the £30 mark. Alas, they were scratched to bits and were unplayable on my cd machine.

Why are some people do careless with their discs?

I wondered about Haitink's Chicago recordings; how do you rate them?

To be honest, it’s difficult to tell when the cd is skipping!

Children? Cats and dogs? I've got neither so can only speculate. The only domestic accident I've had with recordings was very many years ago when I stupidly dropped an LP on to a cactus plant! The resulting scratches ruined it.

Bruckner 7, Mahler 2 and Ein Heldenleben are my favourites.

Pastoralguy: as long as the surface with the label info on isn't damaged, it may be possible to polish or even grind out the scratches. There are machines that assist, or there is a manual method with (typically) toothpaste and Brasso (and lots of patience and elbow-grease!).

I don't think I've listed any loot on this thread since moving from Cornwall to Shropshire. Pickings have been fairly scattered but today in Oswestry wasn't too bad:

Verdi Rigoletto (Callas & Di Stefano live in Mexico City - Warner))
                                LvB Pf Conc's 3 & 4 (Kovacevich/ BBCSO/ Davis - Philips)
Wagner Die Walkure Act 1 (Flagstad, Svanholm, Van Mill/ VPO/ Knappertsbusch - Decca). £3.50 the lot.

Plus an ancient HMV LP in remarkably clean condition in a non-charity shop, highlights of Massenet Manon, De Los Angeles with Monteux shaking the stick. Lashed out £2 on this one, partly I must confess in the hope that it might be worth megabucks but no, just £10 on ebay I'll have to spin it when I get the Linn working again and see if it converts me to Massenet and perhaps late C19 French opera. So much still to learn to like!
