I don't know if anyone here is anywhere near Sedburgh but I was there yesterday and there is a huge bookshop called Westwood Books with hundreds of classical CDs in it. There was nothing I wanted but I'm sure some of you might find something of interest! They all appeared to be 2nd hand and varied in price from £2.99 - £6.99.
    Best regards,
    Jonathan

Indeed. I bought a copy of the same version a few years back for about 50p, only it jumped on one track.

I'd never even heard of Kienzl before yesterday but figured the cast and conductor as well as the period ought to sell it to me. It's a very impressive opera (on the evidence of Act 1): Kienzl was part of the post-Wagner bag and baggage that also included Humperdinck, Schreker, Schoeck, Pfitzner, et al. Same dubious politics, too.

Cycling through Sutton-in-Ashfield today, I stopped off to get a prescription and thought I'd check out the charity shops. It was just as well I did...

            Bax- Symphonies 4/5 - RSNO/Lloyd Jones - 50p for both

Beethoven: Complete Piano Sonatas - Brendel (analogue Phillips set) - £1.99 (for 11 CDs)

I was thinking of calling it quits there, but another shop had a copy of Rachmaninov - Complete Works for Piano & Orchestra, 2 Pianos, + Etudes. Preludes and Sonata 2 - Ashkenazy/LSO/Previn. It was marked as £2.99 but when I offered to pay by card (I don't carry much cash) the s.a. said as they were trying to shift their CDs, he'd take whatever change I'd got - which was all of 30p!

            So - that's 19CDs acquired for £2.79!

My recent triumphs have felt a bit empty without the serious competition pastoralguy gave me. I hope he's OK. Has anyone heard from him?

He was tweeting yesterday. I suspect he got fed up with some of the misbehaviour on this forum.

I don't think that it's either desirable or necessary to make such "suspicions" public, unless we have actual knowledge that we feel able also to share. Forumistas leave us for a whole variety of reasons, some of which are highly personal and have nothing to do (in both senses of that expression) with us. I, too, greatly miss pasto's contributions, and fervently hope that he rejoins us very soon, but the tone of his last posts in February suggest severe displeasure with posts disparaging the morning playlist programmes. I may be wrong, but I'm not sure that that really counts as "misbehaviour".

Sorry to hear about his absence but glad to hear he seems to be well. I don't have his twitter handle, so can't identify him.

Cheap CDs are always the best medicine.

Mind you, if I didn't already have all those I'd be feeling pretty sick

York Micklegate Oxfam BBC MM cover discs free, just asking for a donation. The Amnesty shop in Goodramgate had a few interesting cds i.e. Diary of one who disappeared, Ian Bostridge, a few great conductor doubles: Guilini Kleiber, Berry and others. I'm regretting not snapping them up, a bit "time rich, cash poor" atm.

Today, in Ilkley, I picked up the Leppard recording of Dido & Aenease with Jessye Norman and Thomas Allen. £1.99

Also, in the new-ish Oxfam bookshop, picked up the first volume of Peter Heyworth's Klemperer biography for £3.99. Given the crazy prices I've seen it advertised for online, this was definitely one of my shrewder moves.
