Just back from 2 weeks away, business and pleasure, in Harrogate, Glossop and Snowdonia. Not for the first time I'm amazed at the very poor classical pickings in N Wales. Land of Song? Bryn Terfel?? I'm surprised he managed to pick more than hymns and rugby songs!

Anyway, Harrogate yielded the Menuhin Harold in Italy, Tintner's Bruckner 5, and a SXLP LP of Edith Farnadi playing Year 2 of Liszt Annees de pelerinage to go with her estimable Year 1 (mono), picked off the book/record stand of the West Somerset Rly at Minehead a year or two back. Glossop contributed (CDs) a Ferrier folk-song anthology, the Decca 'Classic' reissue of Melos Ens French chamber Muisc (Debussy, Ravel, Roussel & Guy Ropartz) and a nice 99p anthology of Barber rarities

And no, by 'rarity' I do not mean the Adagio, Essay or Serenade! And I couldn't resist a non-charity LP of Klemperer's Dreigrosschenoper suite, and his own Symph 2 & Merry Waltz.

On to N Wales where the only loot was the legendary Nige '4 Seasons', snapped up only to get urgent change for a car park. Honest!

Then on journey home, a quick diversion to paradise, Yarborough House, Bishops Castle, Salop. But it's not a charity shop either, so I'm not telling...

I was in Llangollen on Tuesday and can confirm your impression of North Wales' charity shops.

Well done for getting Glossop to yield you up some treasures. I've never had much traction there...

I've had good results with crockery from Glossop charity shops, but indeed, they have always proved pretty barren re. worthwhile CDs. Oh, and an 'as new' tough expanding briefcase with combination locks for £3 a month or so ago. That was in the RSPCA shop. Lots of CDs upstairs there, but nothing of interest to me.

The more I continue to follow this thread the more I'm inclined to realise that I'm very lucky living in Edinburgh where charity shop finds are reasonably common. Of course, one does go through fallow phases but on the whole there are rich picking to be found in both Edinburgh and the surrounding towns. I came across a huge pile of classical CDs in a charity shop in a small town called Penicuik on my way to visit my mother in Peebles last week. One of those fortunate days when EVERY charity shop yields something.

There does seem to be a quite arbitrary 'charity shop disparity' (not divide), so your pickings can be either rich or non-existent depending on what part of the country you live in; and the economically richest areas aren't necessarily the most fruitful (if anything, the reverse applies).

About 7 years ago I lived near Bishops Castle for 6 months - and Yarborough House was an oasis in a desert, or so it seemed. A small cafe and lots of second hand CD's and LP's. And a good proportion of them 20th century music - more than I have ever seen together in a shop. Perhaps there is a secret IRCAM hiding in some mid-Wales valley, or maybe something to do with the nearby Presteigne festival, which always has a good proportion of modern music.

Conchis: is this an oblique reference to Glossop's hideous traffic problems? I heard of a resident flying back from Berlin - it took her longer to get from Manchester Airport to Glossop than it had for the whole flight! My own journey from Harrogate was far from problem-free.

Mrs LMP and I were in Llangollen on Tues too. Not much time for shopping but zilch in the way of music found. Could have done with time to do a proper job on the s/h bookshop above the cafe but had a coach to catch Enjoyed the railway and the canal though

This is a question rather than a boast: In my local Emmaus, unnoticed in a corner, is an LP set of Beethoven symphonies conducted by Loughran, a conductor I have heard of and seen once, a very long time ago. I usually buy any Beethoven set (van Otterloo only a week ago), but for the very first time overload has caused me to hesitate. I have so many sets that my shelves and my little grey cells and my time are straining with lack of space. Do I really need this as well? Is Loughran a good guide?

Snap them up! Loughran was/is an extremely underrated conductor. His 1970's set of the Brahms Symphonies with the Hallé are highly rated in this parish, often trumping more exotic examples.

I'd suggest you strike asap since they may not be there much longer!

Strangely, the Loughran Beethoven symphonies survey has not made it to CD. I got the LPs a year or so ago from a charity shop. Unfortunately I cannot recommend them. That, however, should not be taken as in any way a negative comment. It's just that my Thorens/Linn/Audio Technica turntable/arm/cartridge set-up has been out of action awaiting rewiring and service since just before I bought the set. Loughran's survey was held in high regard at the time of release, IIRC. I look forward to getting my act together to restore my playback front end equipment back up and running, and at last listening to the set.

                              - Loughran is a very "good guide" indeed.

They are unavailable on Amazon and eBay sellers expect at least £7.50 for a single
                                Lp.
