Mrs. PG and I have done a fair bit of traveling round England and I've never found that much in charity shops. Edinburgh does seem to be particularly fortunate for classical CDs in charity shops. Yes, living in Edinburgh is terrific despite the 20 mph speed limit introduced on Tuesday!

You needed my 47 paragraph report on 20mph speed limits.

I am sure my local authority is currently "enjoying" it immensely.

The three discs above were less costly than labelled.

£1 each but she said when I reached the counter with two that I could have three for just a pound.

Nothing especially great - but I reckon they are worth just under £10 excluding p and p.

        Surely you mean "because of"?

Let's hope the city fathers have the political guts to enforce the limits and make the streets more congenial for pedestrians, residents and cyclists alike!

Since speed limits do not apply to non-motorized cycles, hopefully the "city fathers" will also seek to define cycling furiously as applying to speeds over 20 mph too.

I've given up on the Oxfam shop in York - if I wanted to buy a Naxos disc, its more expensive than a new one! The selection is usually poor as well. The cancer research shop is better. Harrogate used to be good but I've not been there for ages.
            Best regards,
            Jonathan

Of course a cyclist going at 20 mph is far more lethal than two tons of metal at 30. To say nothing of relative pollution.

Why introduce "30" to the comparison. The matter under consideration is the 20 mph limit, which I applaud. I just hope it is signed in an enforceable manner, unlike the recently introduced zone which passes Feltham Police Station. That only had road surface markings of "20" until a week or so ago, and belatedly added road-side signs indicating the the beginning and end of the limit are still only to be found at one end. I observe the much needed limit, but many others do not, and that includes some cyclists with apparent suicidal tendencies.

Very pleased today to have found the DG Collector's Edition 6 CD boxed set of the Melos String Quartet playing the Schubert quartets for £5.

I found a 1953 recording of Wolfgang Schneiderham playing the Beethoven violin concerto under Furtwangler und Die Berliner Philharmoniker. Seems to have been part of a DG Furtwängler set on the 'Eloquence' label. Alas, I think it's been a bit damp since the paper insert is stuck together although there appears to be be no information, only an advertisement for other 'Eloquence' discs.

The coupling is the Fifth Symphony, recorded 1947.

I've owned that set for a while - and am still enjoying familiarising myself with it - I love dipping in for some fabulous quartet playing from time to time....

                          You found a great bargain!

Thank you pastoralguy and visualnickmos. I'm looking forward to getting to know this side of Schubert's work better.

I can't claim to know this side of Schubert's work, by any stretch, but I love 'dipping in' - I think chamber music is generally more complicated to assimimate than say, orchestral work - maybe that's just my own inadequacy - I don't know? But one thing's for sure - you'll enjoy the journey.

The Schubert 4tets are wonderful. You are so lucky not knowing this music!
