Good luck on your visit then Bryn. There are three in the middle of town near Tesco Express and the fourth at the end of main high street, walking towards the Cop Shop.

Amazing what can turn up in a charity shop. Last week:

Giuseppe Sarti 'Oratorio Russe'. Orch. Symphonique de Bratislave dir. Vaclav Smetacek. Label: Ermitage

Think the work dates from about 1793.
This might be the only recording of this work? No recording date in the booklet (in French), Amazon selling recent re-issue, youtube recording not identified but sounds same.

Picked up Colin Davis's recording of the Marriage of Figaro for £3 over the weekend. I'm not that keen on opera, Wagner and some Strauss aside, but this looked too good a chance to refuse.

Lucky you! One of the best ever recordings of the work (which is one of the best ever Operas)

Yes, this was my first ever opera recording (on LPs) and still one of my favourites; I was playing the CD incarnation just this weekend. A treat in store for Petrushka. If I was cast away and forced to save only one opera, M of F would be it - and the Davis would certainly be on my shortlist of recordings.

PS I think Boilk is referring to the web browser software called Opera (I imagine it was your use of the capital O that sparked the thought...)

Nice vinyls in Oxfam today. Shostakovich 3 & 6 with the Moscow PO for 50p, I know the performance of No. 6 but have not heard him in No. 3.
Prokofiev's 6th with Zdenek Kostler and the Czech PO, also for 50p. This is a nicely recorded Supraphon, a fine performance less overtly dramatic than some.
Finally, Fou T'song in two Mozart concertos on Music for Pleasure, K 271 and K 414 with the Vienna SO and Brian Priestman, very poised performances with a realisticg balance between piano and orchestra, well worth £1

From the Red Cross Shop: Set 2 of the Lyrita "Celebrating 50 Years devoted to British Music"
I wouldn't normally buy compilations but British music is largely an unkown area for me. It includes: Gordon Jacobs, Daniel Jones, John Joubert, Walter Leigh, George Lloyd, Maconchy, Mathias, Rawsthorne, Cyril Rootham, Scott, Robert Still, Phyllis Tate, Malcolm Williamson & William Wordsworth.
Unplayed, still shrink-wrapped, 4 cds for £3. A quick check online reveals it's selling for £18 at Amazon and Presto. Shame they didn't have Set 1 as well.
