Should perhaps be in Scores and editions, but I picked up what looks like a brand-new copy of Mahler 6 (Dover miniature score) for £3.99 in the Oxfam Bookshop in Thame this morning.
Had gone there with a load of books not being transferred in house move, as local shop has closed, and it is easier to get to than Oxford centre, so I thought just one book back for about 100 taken in was OK!
PS: Please don't tell me if it's a duff edition.

I believe that it's the same edition as the Dover larger version (coupled with the Fifth Symphony) Pulcie - which has served me very well over the past thirty years. I borrowed the Universal Edition pocket score from the Public Library with the intention of copying out any necessary "corrections" into the Dover edition - gave up looking after a few days: seemed to be nothing different (beyond the considerably cheaper price sticker). And the Movements are all in the correct order, too.Numquam Satis!

I have the old Cleveland/Szell recording, which has the scherzo second, as in the score, and the BBC MM one (BBCPO/Mackerras; well thought of on this forum iirc), which has it third.
I need to follow it with the Szell, then, to avoid flipping pages, at least for starters.

Nice mix of composers and genres.

Did the rounds in Penzance today and picked up a Freddy Kempf Schumann (BIS) for £1 and part of a 4 for £1.99 Gyorgy Alexandrov Sibelius 2. Another 49.25p worth was a 12 CD set still in cellophane - Classical Moods -12 well filled discs but infuriatingly no hint as to the performers - maybe very good - not tried them yet but they were manufactured in Hong Kong in 2004 by or for Entertainment Direct. If anyone knows the recording source(s) I would be pleased to know them.

I keep weighing up whether to bother with CDs in Oxfam bookshops locally. I went to pay for a book at the counter, and the chap was pricing CDs using the Amazon app.on his mobile!. I suspect they are mostly offered at close to the offer price on Am. without the postage. I do consider Hyperion and Virgin Veritas labels that aren't on Naxos music library and today bought the Parrott Monteverdi vespers for £3. Couple of weeks ago, though I spent a happy hour looking through the stock of the Oxfam bookshop in Islington, near Angel tube (never been there before. Miles better than Victoria or Marylebone. Not cheap but some worthwhile recordings (there was a Leonhardt/ La petite band B minor Mass there for £8 - which I already had).

I've scored some good stuff in Oxfam Islington (a brand-new shrink-wrapped Boulez/Chereau Ring cycle on DVD for thirty quid, for instance) but considering the catchment area the stock should be better than it is. In general, I find London charity shops to be disappointing.

With relatives in the city, we visit at least twice year but always for the day coming in from the Borders. Unfortunately I now feel the magnetic pull of the Br Heart Foundation etc shops as Mrs CS and I pass, but I realise there is no way I can get to spend much or any time in them.....
