There are no charity shops in the British sense. But second-hand - yes, they exist. In Béziers there was excellent one where I found a fabulous Mahler 5th with Mackerars/RLPO for 1 euro. In Montpellier there is Gibert & Joseph which is very good - a climb of steps up to the 4th floor for the CD/record section! Also in MTP - O-cd (second-hand) and next to the Cinéma Diagonal - a brilliant shop for CDs and vinyls (don't remember the name) - classical, jazz - etc, etc... got a few bargains there over the years. As for the flea markets/car boots - not much in the way of decent music of any sort. That's all I can say about it.

Did rather well yesterday - Hogwood Haydn Creation, Hogwood Mozart Coronation Mass + Vesperae, Britten`s Decca set of the Bach St John Passion, Naxos Bach Motets disc, Elgar Cathedral Music on Hyperion, plus a random Naxos collection of Drottningholm music whose booklet notes are Swedish only. Princely sum of £3....

I went to the Barbican yesterday to book some tickets and went on to St Giles Cripplegate. They have a splendid book sale every couple of months, and their good quality classical LPs are usually worth investigating:-
            Beethoven Concertos 2 & 4 Katchen / Gamba
            Mozart Concertos 17 & 18 Schiff/Vegh
            Mozart Concertos 20 & 21 Gulda / Abbado
Mozart Piano Sonatas Katchen ( Mono)
Schumann and Grieg Piano Concertos Anda / Kubelik

Plus an interesting biography of William Russell Wallace, total £13

Whoops! Just forgot, Vivaldi Flute Concertos -Linde

These two alone are worth it - I don't know the other recordings.

I've always liked Katchen and his Beethoven PCs are very good SDD228 if my memory serves.

... any relation of Alfred 'Malay Archipelago' Russell Wallace, originator separately but then jointly with Darwin of the theory of natural selection?

I've been in Edinburgh for the past fortnight (poaching on pastoralguy's patch! :)). Didn't pick up that much because I was busy during most of the day-time, at the Festival but my final day, before taking the train yielded the following:

                              Elgar: The Kingdom LSO/Boult
Elgar: Gerontius and Walton: Belshazzar's Feast - RLPO/Sargent
Smyth: The Wreckers (BBCPO/Martinez) - interested to hear this much-scorned work.
                              Gabarek/Hilliard Ensemble: Mnemosyne

                              Total cost to self: £6.50
