    What a brilliant haul!

I definitely see you as 'the competition' on this thread. Isn't it just as well we don't share the same 'manor'?

We're very lucky here in Edinburgh that there are a lot of charity shops in affluent areas. There are basically two types. One is where the shop has no idea of what they have and sell discs at a standard price which can vary between 50p to £3.00. And the other is where someone sits and looks up the discs on Amazon and prices accordingly!

Great fun though and it's always a treat when one turns up a rare cd for little cash!

Strictly not the usual charity shop find, however you might find this interesting: In this BHF charity shop, nothing in cds, on the way out, passed the electrical, with old Goodman, Matsui etc. fm tuners on display, and there in pristine condition was this,* with no price ticket. ‘How much?’ ‘£20’, intake of breath, incredibly cheap; ‘oh, alright £15,’ ‘Bet it won’t, work but I’ll take it.’ Back home, fiddled with the unusual aerial connectors, no sound, next day went to Maplins, they suggested a £2 connector, connected it, still no sound, screwed it on a bit tighter, and presto–sound. Now I’ve replaced the system’s vintage fm tuner with this remarkable *Arcam Alpha10 DAB tuner, and the sound is stunning. Later did a Google and learnt it’s original price a few years ago was a whopping £800. Now that’s what I call a good charity shop trawl.

Do tell us, what was "this,*"?
I keep hitting the Escape key, but I'm still here!

Forgive my grammatical deficiencies LeMartinPecheur, ‘this’ referred to the *Arcam Alpha 10 DAB tuner, (I did use asterisks), that said, it looks and sounds superb, especially when tuned to Radio 3.

Nice little haul these past two days...

Beethoven's Violin Concerto. Grumiaux with the Concertgebouw under Sir Colin Davis.

Mischa Maisky and the wonder that is Martha Argerich 'Live in Japan' playing Chopin, Franck and Debussy.

Grumiaux again playing the Brahms and Bruch concerti.

Nielsen. Symphonies 3 & 5. The Royal Scottish Orchestra (actually, the RSNO, leader Edwin Paling) under Jack Thomson.

The Brahms Piano Quintet played by Barry Douglas and the Tokyo Quartet.

Mendelssohn. Fingal's Cave, the e minor violin concerto and the 'Scottish Symphony'. The SCO under Joseph Svenson

And, an original Philips 'Blue-Face ' cd of Liszt played by Claudio Arrau.

              £12, the lot!

Ah, 'my bad' I'm sure but I thought you'd bought an unspecified 'system' which is now working splendidly after replacement of its tuner by the Arcam.

Last week, I picked up the Uchida Mozart Piano Sonatas for £5.99 (new) in Oxfam Harrogate: a present for Mrs. Conchis.

Not such an outrageous bargain as some that have been reported - the times we live in, eh?

... for really really annoying music?
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
                      Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

Not that recent, but a year or so back I picked up a few BBC Music Guide in Very Good/Like New condition fromn an Oxfam shop art 99p each. Among them was H C Robbins Landon's Haydn Symphonies. Recent considerations re. the Hogwood, Brüggen and Harnoncourt recordings of those symphonies got me to fetching it down from the shelf. Noting that the author had also written a rather more extensive tome on the subject of the symphonies of Haydn, I went searching it out via Google. Doing so gave me the surprise that the little BBC Music Guide was commanding silly (i.e. inflated) prices. The grander tome was way beyond my budget. However:

                              Yesterday in Nottingham:

Massenet, Thais - Sills, Milnes, Gedda. NPO/Maazel - £2.00, with full libretto.

They also had the Collard/Previn Complete Saint Saens Piano Concerti, but I don't need another set of those, having already got the Rouge/Dutoit set.

Might be worth popping back for if it's in your locale - it's a great set, as is the Dutoit, of course
