I have given up looking in York charity shops for cds. The only one with anything decent is Oxfam on Micklegate but the prices are absurd.
    Best regards,

I was in there on Monday - both of the York Oxfams are pricey. I've bought things from there in the past when I though they were 'reasonably' priced, given their rarity, but most of the time they're unrealistic.

I wonder just how many of the CDs in charity shops actually come from the local area? I was chatting to one of the people behind the counter in a hospice shop and when I enquired about classical discs was told I'd have to wait until they had a delivery from the warehouse.

It all sounds suspiciously big business to me but hope that somewhere along the line someone in need is benefitting,

Not hospices, I don't think: where I live they have a warehouse to store and sort donations, and use all the shop space for sales.

          Oxfam now, there's different matter.

I have never found a classical music CD at my local Cancer Research shop. On the other hand, given their prices for books, I wouldn't buy them in any case.

And yes Oxfam book/record shops price optimistically too. Rarely do I buy a CD. At those prices, if I really want something I can find it elsewhere, or on Google Play Music or Spotify. OTOH, when I searched for a piece recommended by Rob Cowan a couple of years ago, the CD was not distributed in the UK, but a Google search revealed Oxfam in Sheffield had it for sale.....

(and after I bought it I found it was on Spotify!)

Currently Listening to a wonderfull mahler 7 Neumann conducting the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig £3 from Oxfam Beeston on Berlin Classics Eterna

Noticed some good looking Hifi kit on gumtree in the Mansfiled area which might be worth looking at if your in that are. Mansfield is one awful town but does have some affluent people living around it.

A surprisingly fruitful lunchtime in Wadebridge today, the following
                  LPs, all looking very playable:
                  1) German EMI LP of Helen and Klaus Donath: Schubert, Wolf & Strauss lieder. Don't think it was issued in this country though it has a Deutsche Schallplattenpreis sticker.
                  2) Beethoven Synphs 1 & 8, LSO/Krips, Everest SDBR 3089. Could be an American pressing.
                  3) Elgar Symph 2, SNO/ Gibson (RCA)
                  4) Mendelssohn pf cons by our board member Peter Katin/ LSO/ Collins (Decca Eclipse but genuine early stereo)
                  5) & 6) Carlos Paita in Dvorak 7 (a Penguin Guide rosette disc but a bit rare I think) and Gotterdammerung highlights (PG not quite so keen)
                  7) The CBS Gould/ Stokowski Emperor conc
                  8) Decca 10" of Ferrier in "Recital of Arias" (the usual suspects: Art thou troubled, What is life?, O rest in the lord and Ombra mai fu).

Then in shop across the road, these CDs for less each than the LPs:
Lindsays in Haydn op64, Marilyn Hill-Smith in a Chandos operetta collection, Serebrier in Tchaik String Serende, Mozartiana etc and the MMC MM of Mark Wigglesworth's Mahler 10. This last I snapped up in case any boarder wants it: see separate thread.
I keep hitting the Escape key, but I'm still here!

I always assumed that donations went off to a central depot to avoid the embarrasment of being seen in something somebody has donated.

I don't think they are that sophisticated or sensitive.

Some are - particularly those associated with hospices; they are all too aware that many of their donated items come from relatives of those who have died in the care of the hospice and so send items away from the immediate area. Different, perhaps, for books & CDs (where you are less likely to encounter the deceased's possessions) but certainly the case with clothes.

                            I hadn't realised that.

Excellent bargain. Lots to enjoy in this set. Well spotted!

Slightly deviating, but thought I'd throw this one into the mix, as you mention Solti. I particularly enjoy this Brahms PC no. 1
