Favourite Bernard Haitink recordings

With the Philharmonia alongside the Cello Comcerto & the Second Symphony in 1984? I was at that one but can't remember him going airborne. I managed to worm my way into the rehearsal that morning and took several photos. Would I get away with that now, I wonder?

Released on 4th June, in Germany at least (on both jpc.de and amazon.de). Doesn't yet seem to be on the BR Klassik website. I'm assuming that it'll have been recorded last December at the BRSO's concerts in Munich.I'll be bunging in an order forthwith as this particular marriage of a great conductor and great orchestra seems to me to produce outstanding results e.g. their Bruckner 5th.

Gutman really put the boot into the Haitink 9 in IRR this month. I struggle to see what is the problem ,however, with being pro Bernstein in Mahler . I do not like all his Mahler records but some of his recordings of Mahler are magnificent - 1,5 & 7 in his DG cycle in particular .

I enjoy Bernstein too and have his DG set. It's just that Gramophone has had an unvarying slant on Mahler for as many years as I can recall. Maybe the new editor will shake things up a bit to provide greater balance.

I recently picked up Haithink's recent recording of Shostakovich 15 with the Concertgebouw - pretty damned good (and the sound seems to have a very real concert hall 'presence').

(Thinking about the "Bargains" thread, the disc makes me wonder what actually is a "bargain" - a dirt cheap disc or boxed set that you rarely listen to or a CD that could by no stretch of the imagination could be called cheap but gives insights and lasting pleasure over many years.)

A fair point - in the old days of course Michael Kennedy reviewed much of the Mahler with Richard Osborne chipping in .

Ideally, "a dirt cheap disc/boxed set" that "gives insights and lasting pleasure over many years" (the Loughran Brahms cycle, for example). You're absolutely right, though; many full-price discs (the Haitink you mention) are worth their weight in gold. But don't give the Labels "ideas"!
