There is a Mahler 6 that the BBC broadcast live from the RFH (on Radio 4) in March 1983 at which I was present and which, as far as I know, has never seen the light of day since. I was also present at that unforgettable 1983 Prom and I'd be pretty sure that this one is retained in the box. A later one from 1991 appeared on EMI.
Perhaps Laurie Watt can confirm the existence or otherwise of a tape of the March 1983 performance?

Laurie (or anyone else)
Somewhat off topic, but Tennstedt related nonetheless.
Tennstedt gave the premiere of Paul Dessau's Bach-Variationen in 1963, according to the liner notes in the Berlin Classics release conducted by the composer. I also have a recording by the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Rolf Keinert, on the Pilz label. Interestingly, they start very differently: one with timps; the other not!
Do you happen to know if there is a Tennstedt recording of this piece?
I wish some enterprising orchestra/conductor would take it into their repertoire.

If anyone does have a copy I suspect the LPO would love to hear of it - I certainly would. There is some more Tennstedt material which I am hoping they will put out some time - eg possibly some Stravinsky close to your heart...!
I'm aware that live Tennstedt/LPO recordings are not a bottomless pit so must be grateful for all we have. That said, it would be great if something like this seemingly forgotten Mahler 6 could be unearthed from the vaults."The sound is the handwriting of the conductor" - Bernard Haitink
