Another recording not easy to acquire save for buying another boxed set!

The lengths that some people will go to to justify a new purchase

The boxed set is cheap compared to the ££££ that was being asked for 2nd hand copied of the original release....

Well having previously traded the studio box for the one which also had live 5 6 7, not an unsupported request?

            Update: LPO Facebook page says:

"... thanks for your feedback. Regarding the new Tennstedt Mahler 2, we're very happy to consider releasing it as a new standalone release in the future if there is enough interest."

            You know what to do.....

Just to be clear, is the performance of the Sixth the Proms one?
Alison, it is the Proms 6th as previously released on the label.

Thanks Laurie. It doesn't harm to have a spare copy of a superlative performance.

There is a Mahler 6 that the BBC broadcast live from the RFH (on Radio 4) in March 1983 at which I was present and which, as far as I know, has never seen the light of day since. I was also present at that unforgettable 1983 Prom and I'd be pretty sure that this one is retained in the box. A later one from 1991 appeared on EMI.

Perhaps Laurie Watt can confirm the existence or otherwise of a tape of the March 1983 performance?
Petrushka, I am sorry, I did not answer this question! I am not aware of any extant recordings of the March 1983 RFH performance. If anyone does have a copy I suspect the LPO would love to hear of it - I certainly would. There is some more Tennstedt material which I am hoping they will put out some time - eg possibly some Stravinsky close to your heart...!

                    Laurie (or anyone else)

Somewhat off topic, but Tennstedt related nonetheless.
Tennstedt gave the premiere of Paul Dessau's Bach-Variationen in 1963, according to the liner notes in the Berlin Classics release conducted by the composer. I also have a recording by the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Rolf Keinert, on the Pilz label. Interestingly, they start very differently: one with timps; the other not!
Do you happen to know if there is a Tennstedt recording of this piece?
I wish some enterprising orchestra/conductor would take it into their repertoire.

I have an early Tennstedt radio broadcast from 1963 re-broadcast by MDR in 2012 of this piece. Tennstedt conducting the Mecklenburgisches Staatskapelle Schwerin.
                      PM me.

Is there no Tennstedt biography? It would make a fascinating read.

I must confess I have little knowledge of his pre London career.

Thanks for coming back on this, Laurie. The Mahler 6 took place on March 31 1983 in the RFH and was definitely broadcast live on Radio 4. Do the BBC themselves not have a tape?

I'm aware that live Tennstedt/LPO recordings are not a bottomless pit so must be grateful for all we have. That said, it would be great if something like this seemingly forgotten Mahler 6 could be unearthed from the vaults.

One of the reasons I got involved with the making available of my recordings for BBC Legends, ICA Classics and the LPO Label was because of the BBC's non-existent archives policy for decades until comparatively recently! They either deleted recordings or re-used the tapes without any regard of what was on them and certainly did not catalogue what they had until, similarly, recently. With the recent Tennstedt Beethoven 5 of mine on the LPO label, there was a BBC copy but the quality was not good, so mine was used (it is thrilling big band classic Tennstedt Beethoven)!! With this Mahler 6 from the RFH I am sure there must be someone out there with a copy but the BBC certainly do not have one!
