I'll admit it. For those who, perhaps, belong to the history of publicity rather than music (in the words, almost, of Leavis) in their interpretation of Vivaldi, I'm with Red Priest.
What on earth is a "serious" musician?
I've met several musicians who have worked with him who have nothing but huge respect.
Definition: "serious musician?"
Whilst a lot of people seem to be rather irritated by NK's appearance etc, he is a consummate musician and he really believes in good music. Look how he presented Elgar's VC at the Proms, a few years ago, for example?
Don’t cry for me
I go where music was born
J S Bach 1685-1750
I had not played that Elgar violin sonata recording for a long while as it was pretty worn out but was promoted by the Gramophone collection assessment where it is praised but placed for some up fathomable reason to the Tasmin Little which I think is significantly less inspired to buy a CD copy .
It really is magnificent and the miniatures that accompany it simply could not be better played .
I have to confess that I find Nige's antics and image a bit distracting/alienating/gimmicky. All of this informs my mindset when I listen to a performance by him (which I'm not, generally, that inclined to do).
However, to suggest he is not a 'serious musician' strikes me as a little unfair. He's invested the practice hours in becoming a virtuoso and he surely wouldn't have an audience if he wasn't still delivering the goods. I'm sure I am in the minority in not liking the way he presents himself.
It might be an idea - given that his audience is split between people who like his more outlandish incarnation and those who just want to hear him play the standard repertoire - for him to adopt a 'two images' strategy. He could play the concert repertoire in concert venues, wearing concert gear, turn up on time, take his bows and then go home. Then the 'other Nige' could play the Hendrix stuff etc at rock venues, where 'rock values' prevail. That way, everyone would be happy.

Why on earth should he give a toss about this nonsense ...... "concert gear" etc etc
The musicians I know who have worked with him have nothing but praise
Music isn't necessarily divided into the boxes you suggest... "standard repertoire" "Hendrix stuff" etc ..... Hendrix IS "standard repertoire"
