Ida Haendel - new BBCMM CD

I've just received the November edition of BBC Music Magazine. The cover disc has two Ida Haendel performances from the Proms, the Brahms Violin Concerto dating from July 1982, and the Britten from July 1994, with the BBC SO conducted by Rhozdestvensky in the Brahms and Andrew Davis in the Britten.

Very impressed by the Britten (haven't listened to the Brahms yet)

Fab news - off out now !!!

Poor Ida after the 1994 Britten she was never invited back to the Proms after nearly 60 years playing there . She was still playing enough for several years after that .

Can we expect ecstatic reviews from pastoralguy? (Wasn't he mightily miffed when the BaL on the BB Concerto failed to mention Ida's studio recording with the Bournemouth SO and Berglund?)
I keep hitting the Escape key, but I'm still here!

Oh yes!! And I NEVER forget a slight against the great Ida! Just because she improved Britten's cadenza caused her to be ruled her out of court! I remember writing to a BBC producer and using the expression 'shoddy, shoddy, SHODDY! The reply I received proved my disgust had hit its mark.

Anyway, I'll be in Tesco tomorrow post place of employment. There must be piles of Ida Haendel's recordings in radio stations archives round the globe.

              Thanks for the heads up.

For what reason? Did they think she was past it.

Strong memories, standing quite close in the arena, of Ida in a striking red dress doing the Brahms with Leinsdorf in 1971.

Ms. Haendel wasn't one to suffer fools gladly and I suspect she said what she thought at some point and some faceless nonentity took offence.

I could stage a spelling intervention if you feel strongly enough!
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
                        Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

                          The Britten is superb.

                            Agreed!
Thought the Brahms a little staid, not enough sparkle, but not really giving a fair listen to either (downstairs system as meal being prepared and crossword being tackled!).
                            And yes she is feisty!
Met her when I was living in Canada as a graduate student.
I turned pages for her accompanist at a recital.
I was a little surprised that she asked for a music stand (Franck sonata); she was more than surprised that the venue did not have one. My partner rushed back home and got his; she signed the cardboard box it lived in (sadly now lost after many house moves).

The Britten is a really great performance. Electrified atmosphere, IMO not to be missed.
The Brahms is a good performance, but not top-notch (in terms of orchestra [bit heavy handed] as well as of recording). Nevertheless a very enjoyable, feisty Haendel performance
