I've always been intrigued by this cd's cover photo which looks like it's been taken in a store cupboard! La Haendel looks like she's sitting on a table whilst Sir Adrian seems to have his left hand on her knee! There's a square pin plug on the left and piles of stackable chairs. No glamour shots here!

      .....a bit of 'creative' art-direction

I've listened to this recording quite a number of times, and much as I like it, it will never be a top-drawer CD, simply because to my ears at least, I just cannot get used to the fairly slow tempi. Is it just me?

I've often been tempted by her recording with Sir Simon, but never 'bitten' due my indifference to Rattle's conducting. Again - is it just me?

The Boult is interesting but the Rattle is much better and more vital and is coupled with one if the greatest accounts of the Sibelius on record

I can't recommend this disc highly enough. Sensational accounts of both Elgar and Sibelius. It's never far from my CD player.

Thanks, but it's not good news for my bank balance!
Just out of interest, how does the Sibelius (above) compare with her recording with Berglund and the Bournemouth SO? (EMI)

It is a little bit quicker than her studio account but great as that is there is an extra intensity in the live recording that makes it a thrilling experience - whenever I listen to it I cannot imagine it being bettered.

What is odd about it is that after a few months it disappeared from Testament's site and is no longer to be found on Presto and the like although there are still copies on Amazon - I wonder why it has been deleted ?

This recording was recorded both digitally and in analogue and the recording venue was divided between both Abbey Road and Kingsway Hall. It was never released digitally because there were quite a lot of horn bloomers, as the section had had a heavy night and Glyndebourne the night before, and in those very early days they were not able to edit the digital tapes. So, having been intended as EMI's first digital recording, it had to be released as an analogue recording! So, unless, I have missed a very recent DDD re-issue (my copy being the EMI GROC release), it seems to me extraordinary that in all the years since EMI (now Warner) have not gone back to the digital tapes and edited them as that editing incapacity was, as we all know, very short lived.

Rattle's conducting is very good indeed in both the Elgar and the Sibelius!

Someone is selling this as a 'buy it now' on eBay for £8.25.

About four years ago, I lived in Bathgate, a small town about 30 minutes away from my place of employment. I listened to this disc every day for about a month on my daily commute and love it to bits! Ok, I'm a huge Ida Haendel but this is one of my top 10 CDs!!

In fact, I'm going to play the Beethoven tonite. If the price is right, don't hesitate!

Please let me know what you think. I promise you it'll be worth every penny!

I also wonder how much there is hidden in archives round the world.
