I agree - anyone concerned that this could be a rather gentle run through with Haitink 'in the autumn of his days' can rest assured it is very fresh and alert, and rather finer than any of his other recordings of the work.

Is this a recording of the performance in 2006 celebrating 50 years since Haitink's first concert with the orchestra in 1956 (with Das Lied von der Erde after the interval)?

I also like the van Beinum recording with Margaret Ritchie very much and I think around the same time (1952?) Bruno Walter and Elisabeth Schwarzkopf made a recording with the RCO. The latter is on a 2cd set on Music and Arts.

My favourite Haitink is the 1967 with Elly Ameling.

Very likely - according to my CD cover it was "Recorded live at Concertgebouw Amsterdam on 7 November 2016". The second half has not to my knowledge been issued and I have no idea whether or not it was recorded, or who were the soloists.

It is, as Haitink's debut with the Concertgebouw Orchestra was November 7th 1956.
A concert for November 2016 is planned, btw.

Always has been until now for me too. Raskin is perfection in it IMO. Being pushed currently in my house by Von Stade/VPO/Abbado, which is being played often.

When I want a somewhat darker view of the piece, I turn to Horenstein.

This release will give us an astonishing feat that I think could well be unique in the recording world: the Concertgebouw will have recorded Mahler 4 with every one of its principal conductors including Mengelberg, van Beinum, Haitink, Chailly and Jansons. Only Jochum is missing in the recording age but as he shared the job with Haitink perhaps we can let that go?

Can anyone think of a comparable situation in the recording world?
                      Hiya Petrushka,

I assume you are talking about the Mahler 4 contained in quite wonderful 14 disc box set of the 'Marris Jansons Live - The Radio Recordings 1990-2014'. The 14th disc is a DVD of a stunning live performance with Anna Prohaska (soprano) from the Concertgebouw on 25th December 2014.

No, as discussed earlier, the forthcoming release is an SACD, with Dorothea Röschmann.

May I put in a good word for James Levine's recording debut with the Chicago Symphony in 1974? Lacking symphonies 2 and 8, Levine's part-cycle with three different orchestras often falls below the radar. Today it may not feature in many lists of the top recordings, but when I played the LP of No.4 on its release, I felt I'd never before heard such glorious string playing, particularly in the third movement.
