The Concertgebouw and Mahler 4

I see that there is a forthcoming release on the RCO Live label of Mariss Jansons conducting Mahler's 4th. This release will give us an astonishing feat that I think could well be unique in the recording world: the Concertgebouw will have recorded Mahler 4 with every one of its principal conductors including Mengelberg, van Beinum, Haitink, Chailly and Jansons. Only Jochum is missing in the recording age but as he shared the job with Haitink perhaps we can let that go?

Can anyone think of a comparable situation in the recording world?

Can't think of anything comparable. This is certainly my orchestra of choice for this symphony.

It is for me too. They also recorded it with Solti and Bernstein. There are four from Haitink alone! Needless to say, I have all of them mentioned so far with something of a soft spot for the van Beinum recording.

The NY Phil Conductors from Walter on up to Mehta, but they didn't all record the work with the NY Phil (Boulez).

addendum--Mengelberg conducted the Orchestra before Walter, but also didn't record any Mahler with them...

Yes, you could have a point with the NYPO but things might become awkward when it comes to Boulez.

I'm not thinking of just the Mahler 4; I'm thinking of anything at all where you have one work recorded by all of the chief conductors of an orchestra leading to a continuity of interpretative history from the dawn of recording to the present day. The BPO almost do it with Beethoven 5 but founder when it comes to Rattle who hasn't recorded it with the orchestra.

My immediate thought was the BPO and Beethoven #5, (like the RCO, no recording by its very first principal conductor, von Bulow [if only!]) - but Rattle lets the side down by recording his Fifth with the VPO

The BPO almost do it with Beethoven 5 but founder when it comes to Rattle who hasn't recorded it with the orchestra.

There is, of course, the possibility that the RCO were well aware of this history with the Mahler 4 so made sure of a Jansons issue.

Perhaps we can look forward to a Gatti recording with them in due course? He recorded it with the RPO and it's not bad.

The first CD I ever bought was Concertgebouw Mahler 4 with Haitink. I was buying my first CD player and realised it would be useful to have a CD to play on it. A nice recording with Elly Amling, if not absolute classic.

There was a lovely Concertegbouw Mahler 4 with Ivan Fischer and Miah Persson (filmed in the C'gebouw) on Sky Arts not long ago, recorded 2010.

That's probably the one in the RCO Mahler Blu-ray set. Very fine it is, too.

The first CD I ever bought was Concertgebouw Mahler 4 with Haitink. I was buying my first CD player and realised it would be useful to have a CD to play on it. A nice recording with Elly Amling, if not absolute classic.

My recording of choice is the live one under Haitink with Christine Schaefer as soloist. It is on the RCO Live label (RCO 07003)

I am rather keen on the VPO in this symphony both with Abbado and Maazel - the latter I think possibly the best record Maazel ever made ( certainly of what I have heard )

If it's the Sony/CBS with Katherine Battle - Maazel at his absolute greatest. I agree...
