    Rachmaninov Variations - Trifonov

This is an insanely good record !!!!

79 minutes of music on one CD, stunning from start to finish.

    You get these:

Rhapsody On A Theme Of Paganini, Op.43 - dazzling piano playing with Philadelphia under Yannick Nézet-Séguin
Variations On A Theme Of Chopin, Op.22 - I really, really love this work (Yevgeny Sudbin also great in this)
    Trifonov: Rachmaniana - interesting
Variations On A Theme Of Corelli, Op.42 - not so keen, but I'm not complaining...

"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
    Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

Seconded - terrific stuff . Almost Richter like articulation , great sensitivity and excitement without syrup .

      Terrible haircut though

This is one my wish list! The Paganini variations is one of my favourite pieces.

Wow. Just downloaded and listened to the Paganini. The sound on this recording is brilliant - considerably better than the slightly cloudy sound on my Stephen Hough with Andrew Litton recording. Thanks.

Even better, he's playing the Variations and Concertos 2 and 4 with the Philharmonia at the RFH and other venues this Autumn.

Those not wishing to risk insanity may like to investigate this release from Sept 2014 (rec. Dec 2012) which I've recently caught up with, in which a very satisfying Rach Op 42 and dazzling 2nd Sonata (Osborne's own conflation of Rach's two versions) are couped with some very interesting Medtner (to whom SVR dedicated his 4th PC)... "that makes the most urgent and compelling case for large-scale Medtner that I’ve ever come across" (International Record Review). Customarily fine piano sound from the Hyperion team, plus illuminating notes by David Fanning: http://www.hyperion-records.co.uk/notes/67936-B.pdf

I think I agree that the best thing on this very good record is the Chopin variations - should love to hear him in the second sonata

This is a must get recording! The ones I am most interested in is the Corelli and Chopin Variations, of which I have Ashkenazy playing. How do these compare?

I heard him play it at the RFH and have listened to the recording. Marginally prefer Yevgeny Sudbin's heartfelt and beautiful performance: one of his best. Triff is briliiant in the Rhapsody and I think Yannick inspires the Philly in a brilliant partnership.

Having lived with both recordings for a while now, I'm with you - Yevgeny S brings an indefinable extra emotional something to the piece.

Off-topic save for the Rach/Triff connection, what about this:

                        Oh. My. Goodness...
