Mendelssohn Piano Trios. Something strange at Sony!

I was very much looking forward to the new cd of the Mendelssohn Piano Trios as played by Joshua Bell, Jeremy Denk and Steven Isserlis that’s due out on Friday and is on SONY. I’d pre-ordered it from PRESTO and have already listened to it on their download platform.

However, I’ve just received an email from PRESTO saying that SONY have deleted the physical disc from their catalogue and my order is cancelled and a refund issued. The download has been deleted from my account. (To be clear, the download is free with a purchase of the physical disc).

Bearing in mind what a popular cd this was likely to be it seems strange that SONY would delete the physical disc. However, I was able to pre-order it from Amazon! So anyone wishing a physical cd of this recording better order quickly from Amazon whilst it’s still possible.

It’s a terrific recording by the way.

Has anyone given a reason? Sometimes the artists ask for a record to be withheld for artistic reasons , but too late to prevent its issue. Sir Thomas Beecham even sued CBS (SONY's predecessor) for issuing a recording he wanted withheld. It's now revered as a classic!

No. No reason. Simply that ‘after discussion with the company it has been decided that the cd will be deleted from their catalogue’. It’s still available as a download. I did ‘phone PRESTO but the lady I spoke to didn’t appear to know anything about it. When I mentioned that I had ordered it from Amazon she replied that possibly they had sufficient stocks to fulfill their orders. Looks like the physical disc could become a collector’s item!

It’s one of Gramophone’s ‘Disc of the Month’.

I suspect that Sony has decided to drop the issuing of classical CDs. Time will tell

In this particular case. I'd guess that it's more likely to be a distribution problem given that a new release date has quickly been given. This kind of problem has blighted several Decca boxes in the past year or two but, hopefully, that's now been sorted.

That 25th date for a CD has disappeared from Presto.

A strange case. I have just enjoyed listening to the new Sony Trios via Spotify. I also came across a link to the 2015 BaL on No 1 in D minor, incisively and eloquently done by Harriet Smith, refreshingly on her own in pre-twofer days. A very thorough survey - she said she had explored over 70 recordings. Her winners on that occasion were: Julia Fischer, Daniel Muller-Schott, Jonathan Gilad.)

I received a delayed message from Amazon when it did not arrive in 25 October assuming it was a precursor to getting a cancellation message .

i am now told it is expected between 29/11 and 11/1 - perhaps Sony have had second thoughts ?

Yes, I wondered about that too. I see PRESTO has it as a PRESTO cd. Very strange.
