I came to Bruckner via Horenstein's 9th and I still find it excellent.

For 'indispensable', I'd go for Bruno Walter and the Columbia SO in 4 and 9, Giulini in 8, and Haitink or Karajan (EMI) in 7.

That’s a good list! Funnily enough, I listened to the 1986 Jochum 5th the other day. It was just as good if not better than I remember. Good that’s it’s now easy to find via the orchestra’s own label

Mono, it was 1953 with either Pro Musica Vienna or the Vienna Symphony depending on who you believe, maybe they are the same?

That was a great record released on Vox. I believe there is a stereo version with a UK orchestra from about 15 years on

There's a live stereo 9th on BBC Legends coupled with an extremely good 8th

But the MusicWeb review of the 9th preferred the 1953 version, not great sound but a superb performance.

I dug it out of my collection just now. It was released here on Music and Arts. Probably my first recording of both 8/9 but haven’t played in years

A complete symphony? What's that? The silver lining, is that Bruckner's motets are receiving many more Radio 3 broadcasts than they ever did in the "good old days". Clocking in at five minutes or so, they are an ADHD programmer's dream.

All the same, I was glad (as they say) to hear a Bruckner motet in Choral Evensong on Bruckner's birthday last week.

I was dismayed by the lack of Bruckner at the Proms this year ('24) but Through the Night seems to be on a mission in his honour.
