    Download News

Since downloads are now a major part of the music-buying scene I though it would be a good idea to start a thread dedicated to new releases and related discussions.

DublinJimbo, you will be pleased to see that Qobuz have today released the Nelsons/Boston Shostakovich 10:

Listen to Boston Symphony Orchestra in unlimited on Qobuz and buy the albums in Hi-Res 24-Bit for an unequalled sound quality. Subscription from £10.83/month

Solitaires, Kathryn Stott's new album of 20th-century French piano pieces, looks tempting:

From the French piano literature of the first half of the 20th-century Kathryn Stott has selected four 'solitaires' – works that in their own distinct ways shimmer and

Apologies if this has already been discussed, but boarders might like to know that Hyperion have decided it is no longer economical for them to reissue their back catalogue on the budget Helios label. Instead, buyers will have to resort to downloading these titles. I guess this may become the norm, but at least Hyperion treat downloaders better than most of their rivals do. I use them often, and have had few problems with their excellent site. In the rare cases where I have had an issue it has been addressed quickly. This is the way download sites should be (but aren't).

Thanks for the warning. I'll do a quick catch-up of Hyperion CDs on my wish list, while they're still available. After that, who knows. . . ?

Some of the Helios CDs increased in price recently, some up to £8.50 already on the Hyperion site

Listen to unlimited or download Dutilleux: Métaboles, L'arbre des songes & Symphony No. 2 "Le double" by Ludovic Morlot in Hi-Res quality on Qobuz. Subscription from £10.83/month.

I bought the first issue of Morlot's Seattle Dutilleux with No.1 and Tout un Monde, very impressed with it...
This one's discounted for a few more days...

Listen to unlimited or download Lutoslawski : Piano Concerto, Symphony No.2 by Krystian Zimerman in Hi-Res quality on Qobuz. Subscription from £10.83/month.

Very positive Gramophone review of this (AA - slightly critical of definitional focus in the concerto), but I tend to find the Philharmonie setting itself a drawback in Berlin recordings. Probably have a go anyway, when time allows...

I bought quite a lot of downloads in their summer sales a few years back (when everything in the cataalogue was discounted, not just a selection). Then I realised that one of the orders in the sale period could not be found in the "My Music" folders. They quickly replied and authorised a fresh download of the order without question. As you say, good service....

Thanks for the steer on that SSM issue. I must say I was very disappointed with their Organ Symphony, both as a performance and as a recording. Will give the Dutilleux a whirl, though.

Bach lovers and organistas in general should hear Masaaki Suzuki on the Schnitger/Hinz of Martinikerk, Groningen. Terrific playing and an exemplary recording from Take5's Hans Kipfer:

The recipient of the 2012 City of Leipzig Bach Medal, Masaaki Suzuki has earned an enviable reputation as an interpreter of the music of Johann Sebastian Bach – as a reviewer

I received the CD of the Nelsons/DSCH yesterday. I really haven't had a chance to take it in as a performance but the parts that I did hear, as a recording, sounded somewhat opaque (although I wasn't listening on my main system). How does the download sound?

Yes, I know exactly what you mean. There is some telling detail but not a lot of air, notably in the climaxes. The Passacaglia is a case in point - visceral but ultimately a bit flat. I gave it a qualified welcome...
