Yes, so did I; and used this meaning when I referred to "exact duplications" later - I wish I'd thought of "multiple" versions!

I haven't missed a single one I got rid of a year ago.
A mere year, my dear?! The aeons of regret have yet time to begin their relentless knocking!

References to Spotify and the like brings in new considerations. I think that if I were even twenty years younger, I'd have a different attitude to streaming - just as I might about kindle e-books. As it is, the over forty years of buying a physical object (LP, cassette, CD, DVD - the pristine case, the shiny new disc, checking the surface quality of a second-hand disc, the gentle shredding of the booklet as you try to negotiate it out of the jewel case - and the low sound quality on my computer, means that I gain pleasure from the object itself. And the sheer FAFF trying to retrieve my Download purchases when my last laptop finally gave up the ghost doesn't encourage much faith in that direction, either - downloads get burnt to CD immediately now, the digital information clogging up the C-drive space in ways I find more anxiety-causing than any number of shelves in the house.

Yes, I meant when the same recording turns up repeatedly in reissues. There are some recordings that I have bought several times over in various combinations of reissue and re-mastering

Someone mentioned books. Please don't get me going on books! The problem is of equally epic proportions there as well

One morbid thought that has to be faced: what is going to happen to these vast collections when we finally shuffle off this mortal coil? Has anyone made any provision?

That's not morbid - it's eminently practical. In my Will, all my possessions are to be sold off by my (professional) executors; the monies thus raised going to my beneficiaries. (And as one of my beneficiaries is a charity with a series of nationwide charity shops, they will probably get the books, clothes and CDs.)

I have never got knowingly got rid of a single piece of recorded music in any format, (other than exact duplications) including stuff copied onto tape, and i don't intend to, whatever the storage issues.

and I completely agree with Ferneys points ( except where it is the only option and then I always copy to CD) about digital download retrieval , storage etc. Far too much faff, and without the upsides of physical ownership.
And streaming, though a wonderful resource, is only there as long as somebody provides the service, and at an acceptable price.
I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed or numbered. My life is my own.

I am not a number, I am a free man.

#32 Petrushka. You asked if anyone has made provision for these collections when we shuffle off? I have. I have no children, so I wrote to my nephews and nieces and asked them which of my possessions they would like to inherit. One nephew asked for the CDs and another for the LPs and they are duly bequeathed in my will. I'm not sure they know what they're in for, I never knew they had much interest in music and some of my tastes are a bit obscure, but no matter, if they dont like them they can always give them away. And I hope the one who gets the LPs has a lot of wall space, 8000 LPs take up a lot of shelving.

... I married relatively late in life, relatively recently. Mme v had to get rid of much stuff downsizing from her five-bed house to fit in to my Victorian two-up two-down - this also meant I had to get rid of a lot of my stuff too. Many boxes of books have gone to oxfam (many boxes of books are still lurking in the loft...) ; I got rid of all my LPs. I have not for one moment thought of getting rid of any of the thousands of CDs here.

Mme v has been most understanding...

What an unexpectedly entertaining thread this has turned out to be!

I've no idea exactly how many cds I have, thousands, but certainly nowhere near as many as some on here.
LPs and tapes were traded in years ago (anyone else regret doing this?).
My cd collection is a mess,it's all over the house (gets on Mrs ER's nerves),been meaning to catalogue it for years.
I often get the urge to listen to a cd that I know I have bought, but can't find it,only for it to turn up months later, sometimes inside a completely unrelated box set or in the wrong cd case.
I don't really have multiple collections of the same works (RVW and Elgar excepted) generally 2 or 3 at the most.
                      For example there's only 1 x Beethoven symphony cycle,1 x Bruckner,2 x Mahler,1 x Tchaikovsky plus some individual cds of these works.
I sort of justify my cd buying habit as it's 99% of the time music I don't already have.
                      I download quite a bit too,then always burn to a cd,just in case !

I have long accepted that I like buying and owning even if there's not enough time to hear everything! As vices go, it's pretty mild....

I agree with the poster who implied that downloading leads to fewer "why did I buy that?" purchases

I have just over 100 bought CDs and about 50 off-air recordings. I throw 'old stock' away to keep at that level.

I bought 4 last year and was given 1 for Xmas. In 2013 I bought 6 (counting a double album as 2), I haven't bought any so far this year.

Usually they've been bought to hear performers and works I might want to see live. So, at most, 10 CDs feature performers who're dead. Is this a forum record?
