Weinberg recommendations?

Prompted by Suffolkcoastal's enthusiasm for Weinberg (in this post), what are the recordings that people recommend for someone, like me, who is interested in exploring his music.

Where is the Edge?

If you are looking for Opera, his work "The Passenger" (I think that is the title) has been getting performances in many venues and I believe has been recorded.
His Cello Concertos are a good place to start, imo; very accessible music.
His Quartets are in the Shostakovich idiom, although recognizably a different Composer. If you like DSCh Quartets you might find that a useful guideline.
Symphonies 6 & 12 are a reasonable entry point.
He was the subject of COTW not to long ago. Perhaps you could check the recommendations there.

Suddenly everyone's listening to Weinberg and York Bowen,brilliant.

Weinberg,I've not heard anything by him yet that hasn't impressed.

Good starting points would be IMO.

Violin Concerto (c/w/Myaskovsky) Naxos

The extraordinary Piano Quintet (c/w DSCH) Hannsler Classics

Clarinet Concerto,Chandos.

Cello Concerto (c/w 20th Symphony) Chandos.

Some of the Symphonies are on Naxos (a couple of the 'war' symphonies nos 18 & 19) and I'd especially recommend No 6.

Complete String Quartets,Qator Danel (not cheap though) but an amazing cycle,MW out DSCHs DSCH in some of these works.only IMO btw.

Complete Piano Sonatas, Alison Brewster Franzetti (again not cheap).

Available for a fiver,comes with text in Polish and you can get a reasonable translation via Google but I'd love to get hold of a proper one.

The Requiem,ang on better stop there,basically anything is recommendable in my book.

I should add,I'm by no means a Weinberg expert,just someone who has been completely bowled over by his music to the point of obsession.

I have just one piece by Vainberg, or Weinberg if that's the preferred spelling: the Trumpet Concerto in B flat maj., played by Timothy Dokshitser and yes, I checked carefully and that is how its spelled on the LP cover. As far as I remember, it was very good. The LP is ASD 3236 and also features concertos by Arutyunyan and Kryukov and no, I never heard of any of them either.

For the Piano Quintet try this. Has an excellent sonata for Clarinet and Piano and Jewish Songs after Shmuel Halkin.

Well worth investigating (I was prompted by comments on this board) and not really so expensive. It's worth looking at Euro sources at present favourable exchange rates. (1 Euro = 72p). I saved a few pounds recently by buying the 6CD set at jpc for Euro 29.99 + 5.99 postage. Works out at about £26.

You're right of course gurnemanz.
It's just that in these days of bargain boxes,more than a couple of quid per disc seems expensive.

Whatever the cost it's a stunning cycle IMO.

Front Row had an interview this evening with new CBSO chief conductor Mirga Grazinyte-Tyla and she went out of her way to suggest she would be making a feature of the music of Weinberg.
