The f minor ("number 4") has also been done in the last few years - Berglund "won". (Still, to get 50% of the field is pretty impressive.)

Previn's Sea Symphony is in a class of its own, and inspired interpretation with strong soloists, and stunningly recorded.

Er, well. . . all these composers are actually dead, so is someone suggesting we stop performing their music?

...and perhaps living composers rely to some extent on dead composers for their ideas - some even write stuff based on dead composer's sketches!

I suspect VF is being facetious .

Meanwhile back to the topic . I think there is force in the point that routine is as low as VW performances go .

One should of course not forget Haitink's excellent EMI cycle although I prefer him in the later symphonies to the earlier ones .

The Haitink set is unforgettable (although I seem to have forgotten to mention it before; I thought I had, but perhaps that was on a different Thread) - one of the best things he's ever done. (All of 'em, IMO, not just the later ones - although the Antartica is astonishing.)

I must investigate. I admit I was somewhat put off Haitink's contribution to British music by his recording of Elgar 2, but he is probably better suited to RVW. I'm actually quite scared of buying any recording with Sheila Armstrong though. The microphone makes her strong voice sound weak.
