The LvB 5 seemed all of a pace with Gardner's recent LPO filmed version, but maybe with some extra drive in the 1st movement, for one, perhaps most obviously because of the presence of an audience (with disconcertingly few masks, AFAICT) in Bergen vs. London.

Don't know if this other Bergen Philharmonic video was mentioned in another thread, but the orchestra has this all-British program from earlier in the year (w/o audience) available at the moment:

He’s the real deal indeed. I’ve worked with him several times (on recordings and concerts) and I’d rate him above certain others who are worshipped in these parts.

Bloody annoying that covid has put paid to some really interesting projects with Ed.

Picking up the recent mention in the Michael Tippett thread of EG's inaugural concert as LPO principal conductor of The Midsummer Marriage, Gardner's LPO concerts for his first season are mentioned at this link:

Looking through the whole of the LPO's season, it looks strangely normal. I'm guessing / hoping that everyone at the LPO is vaccinated and that as many musicians as possible will continue to wear masks, to ensure that the whole seasons comes off, and that some of these really big programs (OK, programmes - sorry, I'm American) get to come true.

Will have to see how the year progresses - whether Covid-19 resurges once more to make life more difficult.

I like the look of the concert with Brett Dean's cello concerto. I like some of his work - but not all of it. He's also a nice guy, and a very good viola player.

Maybe I'll find a way to get to that concert. Wednesday 27th April, 2022. https://tickets.lpo.org.uk/events/war-and-peace

Recent Gardner Release, including several of my favourite more searching and contemplative Sibelius works... and it is superb in every respect...

Is Gardner set to be the only british musician to actually benefit from brexit?

british orchestras are set to lose their internationally recruited chiefs, now that working in britain is too difficult and insufficiently profitable for them to pursue it. But Gardner has a burgeoning reputation and a blue (black) passport, so demand for him should be BIG.

EG seems content to make Norway his 'second home' (or maybe even first, as his new wife is Norwegian), with the announcement yesterday of his appointment as music director of the Norwegian National Opera and Ballet, just after he finishes up with the Bergen Philharmonic in 2024:

One would think that this would take EG out of the running for Covent Garden post-Pappano. The LPO and Norwegian National Opera may well be enough for him to handle.
