    Mozart, Divertimento k563

Grumiaux. - you're no longer my favourite. Have lived with you too long !

Heard a magnificent recording from a 2 - year old Edinburgh Festival . Perfect had it not been for the audience spluttering, coughing, making odd noises etc.. However, have this group now on CD under perfect conditions - who ? The Zimmerrmann Trio.

Three superb players, plus 2 Strads & a Guarneri.

Magnificent interpretation, the ' cello much more in attendance, very little vibrato, all together a performance that honours this wondrous music.

I don't expect you all to agree - can only say " I love them both ! "

I agree - the Zimmerman recording is terrific. I never took to the famed Grumiaux - far too much vibrato for my tastes. Also, though I must be wrong, I often have the feeling that Grumiaux is playing a touch sharp..........I get this just-sharp-feeling on quite a few older recordings; I really can't think of an explanation.

But I would place two others on the same level as the Zimmerman: the Hermitage String Trio in Chandos, and the Leopold String Trio in Hyperion. They are all quite similiar in many respects: they are obviously coming from the same limited vibrato post-HIPP school of string playing........On balance, I would probably give it to the Leopold for the adagio, which is played as a true adagio on theirs - a little slower than the others. You can listen to decent excerpts of the here.

Waldo, not heard Hermitage but have received much pleasure from Leopold. Thanks for comment.
