    Aha!

Googling around a bit, you soon discover that BIS did indeed record some DSD masters up to 2005. Some devotees on SACD.net are upset that they stopped...!
And you find a 2009 statement from Ingo Petry saying that they always mastered in PCM from then on, converting to DSD at the last possible moment - they simply preferred the results doing it that way. Most of my many BIS HIRes recordings (including the latest, Oramo Nielsen Cycle) state the "original format" as 24-bit/44.1 etc., (a few don't mention it at all) though the equipment list often includes the Pyramix dsd workstation, or credits the SACD authoring of course. The current eclassical website has much detail on PCM, just the basics on DSD. I guess they could be recording some that way again, but why is it never stated, when BIS are so precise about such things..? (The Aho 12th multi-ch.SACD mentioned in the Fanfare article is from another 24/44.1 original format, btw...)

(The BIS People often make the point that there's far more to a recording than its native format - and the gorgeous, mysterious Japanese CD editions certainly confirm that!)
    .
If Linn used DSD recording, it would seem odd that, on their very detailed webpages, they never mention DSD as a mastering format or offer it as a download... it's all about PCM Studio Masters... why keep it quiet? And Linn DS/DSM players don't play DSD...

I did highlight some time ago that HiFiNews had analysed some recordings offered as HIRes downloads and found them to be upsampled. They made a good old fuss about it, took it up with the various companies, HD Tracks got very upset too, and I doubt many labels would dare to do it now!

Better go & study what the TeddyBear said about copy&paste, copying links by hand is a real pain... thanks, Cuddly!

Well, I would have thought so too, but here's a 24/96 track from Bridge Over Troubled Water. It's obviously a 44/1 album padded out to 96...

I'm not a sound luddite, but I do share some of the frustrations raised.

Moving from analogue to digital plus the globalisation of the music industry should have meant that there's less scope for sub-optimal re-mastering ete. of reissues. From a business perspective, it makes no sense whatsoever for people to be doing remastering of the same recordings in both Japan and Europe, particularly in such a small market. If the Japanese are bettter at this, reduce the size of the European team!

Oh I dunno Mat - isn't it nice to have a few secret pleasures , something rare & strange to seek out or take a gamble on? In the Global Village there aren't many mysteries left...

But in market terms, how many people do you know who seek out the rare & remastered? I only found the original Toshibas, or the recent Kings,
by chance... The Euro market for such quality (even within Classical product) is quite small, and as I said, they must take more care - more time & money to produce. When offered on Euro Amazon sites the prices vary wildly too. And with EMI, the GROCs and Testaments are already pretty good (some earlier Japanese issues were a bit too warts & all...), so an edition which has Japanese notes ( only titles, tracks, dates & venues in English) will seem less attractive to many...

Ah! thanks jayne! I hunted around amazon.fr for ages without finding that No. 4!

Wonder why they don't seem to have brought that one out in the 'yellow' edition...?
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
              Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

Well I've acquired one of these famous Fourths... I suppose one can't complain, £15.62 coming all the way from Watford!

... Another tenner says it doesn't even get a mention on BaL on Saturday...

I have always loved the Sanderling Brahms Symphony recordings with the Staatskapelle Dresden, despite the rather rough - sounding RCA issues. A recent part purchase of a collection yielded these recordings on DENON Mastersonic CD's .......... and what a revelation, in terms of audio quality, they have proved to be, with the performances now emerging from my PRoAC's and Harbeths in full, natural and detailed sound. I may try and seek out some more ........

Yes, I got the 3rd in that edition when it wasn't exactly a bargain! The cycle would have cost over £100 then... Prices look better now.
Just gorgeous though. A damn fine cup of Brahms....

(Trouble is, some Denon MSs don't actually TELL you what they are on the cover...: or even on the back...)

Early (brief) comparisons suggest very pleasingly that THIS is, but I'll need to listen further:
                            http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sibelius-Sym...ibelius+import

At any rate, it seems the only way to complete a Japanese Sanderling Sibelius set should you desire it...

I have that cycle, issued by some East German Label via RCA, and it is my go to Brahms cycle. I never regarded the sound as actually bad. I'm tempted...

Another "item of interest" turns up...

ordered as soon as seen......last encountered this as a very fine HDTT needle drop at 24/96, muted clicks n'all...
Glorious performance! Hope this BMG improves on those cutely attired Navigators at least...
