I was a freshman in college in 1976-77. The guarneri's performed several concerts in Ann arbor, Michigan devoted exclusively to Beehtoven, in the course of the year. Each concert featured an early, middle and late periord work, and the entire cycle was performed. At the time I only knew the middle Quartets, so the Concerts were a revelation to me.
as I got more into record collecting, for some reason other American and Europena Quartets attracted more of my attention. The Julliard, Cleveland, Tokyo, Emerson Quartets at first. The Fitzwilliams in the Shostakovich Quartets were another revelation that dominated a lot of my Quartet listening, and various Czech Ensemble in Dvorak, the Janacek Quartet for that composer... The Guarneris seemed to slip off my radar. Now I have had had several of these reissues come my way that LMP cited in his first post and the music making seems as vital as it did during those Beethoven Concerts. It's good to have these back.
